TLDR
The Cotton-Mouton constants for three homologous series of liquid crystals were measured in the isotropic phase as mentioned in this paper, and the results were compared with theories on pretransitional phenomena.
Abstract
The Cotton-Mouton constants for three homologous series of liquid crystals were measured in the isotropic phase. Some of these measurements were performed with high temperature resolution. The results are compared with theories on pretransitional phenomena. The Landau-de Gennes theory proves to be inadequate to describe the data.

Giant magneto-birefringence effect and tuneable colouration of 2D crystal suspensions.

TL;DR: An anomalously large magneto-birefringence effect in transparent suspensions of magnetic two-dimensional crystals, which arises from a combination of a large Cotton-Mouton coefficient and relatively high magnetic saturation bireFringence, is demonstrated.

From idealised to predictive models of liquid crystals

TL;DR: A brief review and personal perspective of modelling and simulations of liquid crystals and how this has dramatically changed over the years, from idealised lattice to molecular level and now to predictive atomistic models can be found in this article.

Does the characteristic value of the discontinuity of the isotropic?mesophase transition in n-cyanobiphenyls exist?

TL;DR: It is suggested that for each nCB a unique, characteristic minimal value of ΔT, associated with the I-N-SmA triple point, exists and can be hidden in the negative pressures domain for 'shorter' nCBs, and the possibility of the extension of the 'melting curve' into thenegative pressures region as well as the appearance of the'melting inversion' at high enough pressures is indicated.

Liquid crystal binary mixtures of 8OCB + 10OCB. Evidence for a smectic A-to-nematic tricritical point.

TL;DR: The Smectic mesophase of the 8OCB + 10OCB mixtures has been unmistakably characterized through optical measurements as smectic A for the whole composition range.

Short Range Order Effects in the Isotropic Phase of Nematics and Cholesterics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors assume that the local state of order in the isotropic phase is a symmetric traceless tensor Qαβ, proportional to the anisotropic part of a tensor property such as the magnetic susceptibility.

Critical phenomena in liquids and liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this article, critical scattering theory and critical phenomena in alloys magnets and superconductors are discussed. But the critical thinking series phenomena answer guide is not included in this paper.

Phenomenology of short-range-order effects in the isotropic phase of nematic materials

P. G. de Gennes
- 15 Dec 1969 -
TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic birefringence, the intensity and the width in frequency of the Rayleigh scattering, and the flow bireringence are discussed in terms of a small number of phenomenological parameters.

Pretransitional Phenomena in the Isotropic Phase of a Nematic Liquid Crystal

TL;DR: In this article, the authors have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal.
