TLDR
The results show that the deterioration of liver function, irrespective of its aetiology, leads to the decrease in serum selenium levels, and a defect in removal of lipoperoxides is associated with this decrease.

Selenium in global food systems.

TL;DR: Low Se status is likely to contribute to morbidity and mortality due to infectious as well as chronic diseases, and increasing Se intakes in all parts of the world can be expected to reduce cancer rates.

Implication of free radical mechanisms in ethanol-induced cellular injury

TL;DR: Many data support the involvement of free radical mechanisms and suggest that dietary and/or pharmacological agents able to prevent an ethanol-induced oxidative stress may reduce the incidence of ethanol toxicity in humans.

Essentiality of selenium in the human body: relationship with different diseases.

TL;DR: Results obtained in several animal and epidemiological studies have indicated that Se could constitute a dietary factor with protective action against several degenerative diseases.

Cutaneous manifestations of alcohol abuse

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the medical literature and discuss the spectrum of dermatologic diseases associated with the use and abuse of alcohol and recommend that participants should be familiar with the cutaneous manifestations of alcohol abuse and alcoholic liver disease.

Association between cardiovascular death and myocardial infarction and serum selenium in a matched-pair longitudinal study.

TL;DR: A case-control study was conducted to investigate the association between serum selenium and risk of death from acute coronary heart disease (CHD) as well as risk of fetal and non-fetal myocardial infarction (MI) in an area with an exceptionally high mortality from cardiovascular diseases.

Selenium deficiency in total parenteral nutrition.

TL;DR: Evidence is added for the essentiality of Se in man and the need to consider Se supplementation in long- term TPN and the close association between erythrocyte Se and GSHPx activity withTPN and blood transfusion could indicate that for these patients ery throat Se was largely determined by Se from GSHpx.

Antioxidants and cancer. Part VI. Selenium and age-adjusted human cancer mortality.

TL;DR: In the states with high selenium levels, there was significantly lower mortality in both males and females from several types of cancer, particularly the environmental problem indicators, such as gastrointestinal and urogenital types ofcancer.
