TLDR
The desorption of Ba and226Ra from river-borne sediments in the Hudson estuary can be explained quantitatively by the drastic decrease in the distribution coefficients of both elements from a fresh to a salty water medium.About:

Coral record of increased sediment flux to the inner Great Barrier Reef since European settlement
Malcolm T. McCulloch,Stewart Fallon,Stewart Fallon,Timothy Wyndham,Erica Hendy,Janice M. Lough,David Barnes +6 more
TL;DR: Analysis of Ba/Ca ratios in long-lived Porites coral from Havannah Reef is used to establish a record of sediment fluxes from about 1750 to 1998 and concludes that, since European settlement, land-use practices have led to major degradation of the semi-arid river catchments, resulting in substantially increased sediment loads entering the inner Great Barrier Reef.
Journal ArticleDOI
The barite-opal-organic carbon association in oceanic particulate matter
TL;DR: Barite formation appears to be caused by biological activity in the upper water column, but the exact mechanism is unknown as mentioned in this paper, but it is known that barite particles 0.5-5 µm in size are ubiquitous in the ocean and their formation, sinking and dissolution is a major part of the marine barium cycle.

Otolith chemistry to describe movements and life-history parameters of fishes : hypotheses, assumptions, limitations and inferences
Travis S. Elsdon,Brian K. Wells,Steven E. Campana,Bronwyn M. Gillanders,Cynthia M. Jones,Karin E. Limburg,David H. Secor,Simon R. Thorrold,Benjamin D. Walther +8 more
TL;DR: The authors aim to clarify the methods of determining fish movement based on natural and artificial otolith chemical tags and review current trends in determining movement using otolith chemistry, otolith sampling methods, and what influences otolith Chemistry.

The chemistry, fluxes, and sources of carbon dioxide in the estuarine waters of the Satilla and Altamaha Rivers, Georgia
Wei-Jun Cai,Yongchen Wang +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the pH, alkalinity (Alk), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in estuarine waters of several rivers of Georgia in the southeastern United States are reported.

U-Th-Ra Fractionation During Weathering and River Transport
TL;DR: Goldstein and Stirling as mentioned in this paper presented the main directions taken in these domains over the last decade, including the analytical developments made in the measurement of the medium half-life nuclides of 238U series (i.e., 234U-230Th-226Ra) in the mid-1980s, namely, the use of thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) (e.g., Chen et al. 1986, Edwards et al 1987, Cohen et al 1991, Chabaux 1993,Chabaux et al 1994) and more recently the use

Evolution of sedimentary rocks
TL;DR: In this paper, it has been shown that recycling and evolution are complementary concepts and that the observed secular variations in relative proportions of lithologic types and in chemistry of sedimentary rocks were mostly given an evolutionary interpretation.
Journal ArticleDOI
On the chemical mass-balance in estuaries
TL;DR: In this paper, a general model for mixing processes between river and ocean water is presented, in which established criteria for the identification of any non-conservative behavior of the dissolved constituents involved.
Journal ArticleDOI
On the barium data from the Atlantic GEOSECS expedition
TL;DR: Barium profiles at the Atlantic stations of the Geochemical Ocean Sections (GEOSECS) Program are remarkably similar to those for silicate and alkalinity as mentioned in this paper, and both barium and silica behave non-conservatively in basins with restricted circulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-conservative behavior of barium during mixing of Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico waters
Jeffrey S. Hanor,Lui-Heung Chan +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the behavior of dissolved Ba during mixing of fresh and marine waters in a classic salt-wedge estuary was made, where much of the mixing was confined within the river channel.
