Distribution of pentagons and shapes in carbon nano-tubes and nano-particles

Pulickel M. Ajayan, +2 more
- 29 Jan 1993 -
- Vol. 202, Iss: 5, pp 384-388
TLDR
In this article, high-resolution electron microscopy images of carbon nano-tubes and nano-partcles are presented, and the symmetric and asymmetric distribution of pentagons at their end surfaces is analyzed.

Single-shell carbon nanotubes of 1-nm diameter

Sumio Iijima, +1 more
- 17 Jun 1993 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the synthesis of abundant single-shell tubes with diameters of about one nanometre, whereas the multi-shell nanotubes are formed on the carbon cathode.
Book ChapterDOI

Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

TL;DR: Carbon nanotubes have attracted the fancy of many scientists worldwide as discussed by the authors, and the small dimensions, strength and the remarkable physical properties of these structures make them a very unique material with a whole range of promising applications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Aligned carbon nanotube films: production and optical and electronic properties

TL;DR: A method has been developed to produce thin films of aligned carbon nanotubes, which can be aligned either parallel or perpendicular to the surface, as verified by scanning electron microscopy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nanometre-size tubes of carbon

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the present state of understanding of the structure, growth and properties of nanometre-size tubes of carbon and present promising areas of future applications, for example as tiny field-emitting devices, micro-electrodes, nanoprobes and hydrogen storage material.

Helical microtubules of graphitic carbon

Sumio Iijima
- 01 Nov 1991 -
TL;DR: Iijima et al. as mentioned in this paper reported the preparation of a new type of finite carbon structure consisting of needle-like tubes, which were produced using an arc-discharge evaporation method similar to that used for fullerene synthesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

New one-dimensional conductors: Graphitic microtubules.

TL;DR: It is predicted that carbon microtubules exhibit striking variations in electronic transport, from metallic to semiconducting with narrow and moderate band gaps, depending on the diameter of the tubule and on the degree of helical arrangement of the carbon hexagons.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pentagons, heptagons and negative curvature in graphite microtubule growth

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present images from transmission electron microscopy of a further kind of growth morphology, in which cone-like growth is transformed into cylindrical growth by the incorporation of a defect that induces negative curvature.
Journal ArticleDOI

Formation of Carbon Nanofibers

TL;DR: In this article, it is proposed that these structures may be giant fullerenes which have grown by direct insertion into the graphitic network of smaller carbon species accreted from the vapor phase.

Relation between Dislocations and Disclinations

TL;DR: The theory of disclinations contains the equation ∂iαij + ejmnθmn = 0, where α and θ are the dislocation and disclination density tensors, respectively.
