TLDR
The sub-region of West and Central Africa seems to be divided into countries which have accepted the challenge to eliminate rabies with governments committed to pushing forward rabies elimination, while other countries have achieved some progress, but elimination efforts remain stuck due to lacking government commitment and financial constraints.About:

Update on lyssaviruses and rabies: will past progress play as prologue in the near term towards future elimination?
TL;DR: Rabies is an ancient, much-feared, and neglected infectious disease caused by pathogens in the family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus, and distributed globally, this viral zoonosis results in tens of thousands of human fatalities and millions of exposures annually as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rabies in the Tropics
TL;DR: A review of recent research and peer-reviewed communications on the underestimated tropical burden of disease and its management due to the complicated dynamics of virulent viral species, diverse mammalian reservoirs, and tens of millions of exposed humans and animals is presented in this article .

Hui Quan Gan,Xiangqing Hou,Yiming Wang,Gaofeng Xu,Zhifeng Huang,Teng Zhang,Runpei Lin,Mingshan Xue,Haisheng Hu,Mingtao Liu,Zhangkai J Cheng,Baoqing Sun,Zheng Zhu +12 more
TL;DR: In 2019, the incident cases of rabies worldwide were 14,075.51 (95% uncertainty interval: 6124.33-21,618.11), and the number of deaths was 13,743.44 as discussed by the authors .

Mathematical modelling and phylodynamics for the study of dog rabies dynamics and control: A scoping review.
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed review of the contributions of mathematical models and phylodynamic approaches to advancing the understanding of rabies dynamics and control in domestic dog populations is presented. But, despite advances in rabies knowledge, substantial uncertainty remains regarding the mechanisms of local spread, the role of wildlife in dog rabies maintenance, and the impact of community behavior on the efficacy of control strategies including vaccination of dogs.

Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses: the PRISMA statement
TL;DR: Moher et al. as mentioned in this paper introduce PRISMA, an update of the QUOROM guidelines for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which is used in this paper.

Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses: the PRISMA Statement.
TL;DR: The QUOROM Statement (QUality Of Reporting Of Meta-analyses) as mentioned in this paper was developed to address the suboptimal reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

TL;DR: Investment in dog vaccination, the single most effective way of reducing the disease burden, has been inadequate and that the availability and affordability of PEP needs improving, demonstrating that collaboration by medical and veterinary sectors could dramatically reduce the current large, and unnecessary, burden of rabies on affected communities.
WHO Expert Consultation on Rabies
TL;DR: The definition of a rabies-free country or area has been revised to assist public health authorities in better assessing the risk of human rabies resulting from contact with animals.
