Abstract
A thorough review of the advances made so far in seasonal climate predictions and their applications for management and decision-making in agriculture.A practical tool for decision-makers, this book identifies the challenges to be addressed in the next 5 to 10 years, especially in developing countries. In an age of such uncertainty over climate change, there are few more important issues than that of how we feed ourselves. We need to know more about the potential impact of climate uncertainty on our food supplies – and this book is an important addition to the literature in this field.Improved adaptation of food production, particularly in areas where climate variability is large, holds the key to improving food security for human populations.Increasing climate knowledge and improved prediction capabilities facilitate the development of relevant climate information and prediction products for applications in agriculture. This in turn reduces the negative impacts due to climate variations and enhances planning activities based on the developing capacity of climate science. This book, based on an International Workshop held in Geneva in 2005, reviews the advances made so far in seasonal climate predictions and their applications for management and decision-making in agriculture. It also identifies the challenges to be addressed in the next 5 to 10 years to further enhance operational applications of climate predictions in agriculture.

Is there a Future for Small Farms

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that small farms are seriously challenged today in ways that make their future precarious, and there is a need for a concerted effort by governments, NGOs, and the private sector to create a more enabling economic environment for their development.

Climate prediction and agriculture: current status and future challenges

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the current status of agriculture and the need for climate forecasts in light of risk management in rainfed farming, competition for limited water resources, impacts of natural disasters and the multi-dimensional impacts of extreme variability.

A Typology for Vulnerability and Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider vulnerability reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa from a more aggregated macro viewpoint, focusing on risk related to agriculture, since vulnerability and agriculture are intimately linked.

The Future of Small Farms : Synthesis Paper

TL;DR: In this article, a typology of country contexts in which the differing roles and needs for small scale agriculture development are considered are considered. And the potential for small farm development as a driver of growth and poverty reduction and the roles of governments and the private sector in promoting such development are clarified.
