TLDR
In this article, the electrical conductivity of discontinuous thin metal films is assumed to be by a substrate-assisted tunnelling, and it is shown that electrons are emitted from small islands in the cathode region where the main voltage drop occurs.

Method of manufacturing electron-emitting device, electron source and image-forming apparatus

TL;DR: In this paper, an electron-emitting device comprising a pair of device electrodes and an electroconductive film including an electron emitting region is manufactured by a method comprising a process of forming an electcoupled film including steps of forming a pattern on a thin film containing a metal element, and removing part of the thin film on the basis of the difference of chemical state.

Electrical Conduction Mechanism in Ultrathin, Evaporated Metal Films

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the electrical conduction mechanism in the film plane of ultrathin, evaporated metal films and showed that the conductivity depends exponentially on reciprocal temperature, and it should be independent of field at low fields.

Electrical Conduction between Metallic Microparticles

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that conduction can occur in the substrate surface by electron tunneling between the separated microparticles, and that the current carriers can be contributed to the insulator surface regions by the metallic particles.
