Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs): A review on occurrence, fate and toxicity in the environment

TL;DR: The occurrence of QACs in the environment is correlated with anthropogenic activities, such as wastewater discharge from WWTPs or single source polluters, and sludge land application, and this article reviews the analytical methods for determination of Qacs in environmental compartments including surface water, wastewater, sewage sludge and sediments.
Journal ArticleDOI

Feasibility of industrial-scale treatment of dye wastewater via bio-adsorption technology

TL;DR: This review emphasizes the importance of costs in industrial-scale treatment of dye wastewater and provides a way to assess the cost-based feasibility of bio-adsorption technologies and discusses the major factors affecting adsorption and desorption performance based on basic chemical and physical structures ofBio-adsorbents available in literatures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Survey of the anaerobic biodegradation potential of organic chemicals in digesting sludge.

TL;DR: It is suggested that biodegradability assessments made with sludge from one source can be extrapolated to sludges from another source with a reasonable degree of confidence and should help in predicting the fate of an organic chemical during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge.

Increased Use of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic and Beyond: Consideration of Environmental Implications

TL;DR: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are active ingredients in over 200 disinfectants currently recommended by the US EPA for use to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chronic toxicities of surfactants and detergent builders to algae: a review and risk assessment.

TL;DR: The chronic toxicity levels for algae are summarized, showing toxicity to be less in many cases than that predicted from laboratory tests and the field-derived effect levels typically exceed the reported measured environmental levels of the corresponding surfactants indicating the likelihood of no impact.

The adsorption of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide by bacteria, its action in releasing cellular constituents and its bactericidal effects.

M. R. J. Salton
- 01 May 1951 -
TL;DR: The form of the uptake curve of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is that of an adsorption isotherm, and the maximum amounts of CTAB adsorbed showed variations from one organism to another.
