A review of methods for vortex identification in hydroturbines

TL;DR: A review of vortex identification methods for hydroturbines can be found in this paper, where the authors classified five different taxonomies based on five types of vortices (e.g. vortex rope in draft tube, Karman vortex, and inter-blade vortex) and discussed experimental techniques for vortex observation.

Numerical simulation of hysteresis characteristic in the hump region of a pump-turbine model

TL;DR: In this paper, steady simulations were performed to predict the hump characteristic as well as the hysteresis phenomenon in pump-turbine heads, and it was shown that the hump characteristics are caused by the decrease in the work of the runner and the increase in hydraulic loss induced from vortices in the guide/stay vanes and backflow near the shroud at the runner inlet.

Experimental investigation of a Kaplan draft tube : Part II: Off-design conditions

TL;DR: In this paper, an investigation of a modern design Kaplan turbine model was performed in the draft tube with laser Doppler anemometry and flush-mounted pressure sensors, with a focus on the part load and high load operation of the turbine.

Mechanism of high amplitude low frequency fluctuations in a pump-turbine in pump mode

TL;DR: In this article, unsteady numerical simulations were carried out in the pump mode of a pump-turbine at using the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model.

Swirl Flow in Conical Diffusers

TL;DR: In this article, five conical diffusers with different divergence angles were tested to clarify the influences of swirl on the pressure recovery coefficients, and the highest coefficient was observed in an 8-deg diffuser when the flow had a moderate swirl.
