Recent progress in the use of renewable energy sources to power water desalination plants

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the importance of water resources in modern societies and the challenges facing modern societies, while water covers about two thirds of the surface of the earth, while air covers less than one third of it.

Desalination by using alternative energy: Review and state-of-the-art

TL;DR: A review of the highlights that have been achieved during the recent years and the state-of-the-art for most important efforts in the field of desalination by renewable energies, with emphasis on solar energy applications is presented in this paper.

Seawater desalination driven by renewable energies: a review

TL;DR: A review of pilot plants and perspectives of development is presented in this article, where the use of renewable energies in seawater desalination is suitable, especially for remote areas where conventional energy supply and skilled workers are not usually available.

A review on polymer heat exchangers for HVAC&R applications

TL;DR: In this paper, the material properties of polymers are examined, as well as the current state of the art of polymer matrix composites, and it is shown that these materials do hold promise for use in the construction of heat exchangers in HVAC&R applications, but that a considerable amount of research is still required into material properties and life-time behavior.

Solar desalination with a humidification-dehumidification technique — a comprehensive technical review

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive technical review of solar desalination with a multi-effect cycle providing a better understanding of the process is presented, and discussion on methods to improve system performance and efficiency paves the way towards possible commercialisation of such units in the future.

Technical and economic evaluation of distillation and reverse osmosis desalination processes

Neil M. Wade
- 01 Aug 1993 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that distillation in large dual plant is still competitive with seawater reverse osmosis, for Middle East conditions, even though a larger number of units are needed.

The application of solar energy for large-scale seawater desalination

Daniel Hoffman
- 01 Dec 1992 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a combination of solar pond and low temperature multi-effect distillation (LT-MED) provides the lowest solar desalinated water costs, ranging from 67-88¢ depending on interest rate, local insolination, actual pond cost and performance, and are competitive with lowest cost desalined water from a fossil fueled plant, an LT-MED within an electric power cogeneration scheme, when heavy fuel (No. 6) prices are above $150-220/ton.

Heat transfer in thin film-type evaporator with profile tubes

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured local and average heat transfer coefficients in water film evaporation on horizontal profile tubes and showed that the use of longitudinally profile tubes makes it possible to increase, with an account of development of the heat exchange surface, the heat transfer from the wall to the film of the flowing-down liquid by a factor of 1.35-1.85.
