Fine phase mixtures as minimizers of energy
TLDR
In this article, the authors explore a theoretical approach to these fine phase mixtures based on the minimization of free energy and show that the α-phase breaks up into triangular domains called Dauphine twins which become finer and finer in the direction of increasing temperature.Abstract:
Solid-solid phase transformations often lead to certain characteristic microstructural features involving fine mixtures of the phases. In martensitic transformations one such feature is a plane interface which separates one homogeneous phase, austenite, from a very fine mixture of twins of the other phase, martensite. In quartz crystals held in a temperature gradient near the α-β transformation temperature, the α-phase breaks up into triangular domains called Dauphine twins which become finer and finer in the direction of increasing temperature. In this paper we explore a theoretical approach to these fine phase mixtures based on the minimization of free energy.read more

Relaxation of nonlinear elastic energies involving the deformed configuration and applications to nematic elastomers
Carlos Mora-Corral,Marcos Oliva +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a variational model for nematic elastomers that involves two energies: mechanical and nematic, was proposed, and the main assumptions were that the quasiconvexification of the mechanical term is polyconvex and that the deformation is in the Sobolev space W1,p.

Interaction of Martensitic Microstructures in Adjacent Grains
John M. Ball,Carsten Carstensen +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear elasticity model of martensitic transformations for the case of a bicrystal with suitably oriented columnar geometry is explored, in which the microstructure in both grains is assumed to involve just two martensite variants, with a planar or non-planar interface between the grains.

An energy-relaxation-based framework for the modeling of magnetic shape memory alloys—Simulation of three-dimensional effects under homogeneous loading conditions
TL;DR: It is found that capturing the formation, elimination and mutual interaction of all martensitic variants as well as general three-dimensional magnetization vector orientations is of key importance under these conditions and the extended convexification model and modified algorithmic formulation are shown to reliably handle even such general cases.
