Fine phase mixtures as minimizers of energy
TLDR
In this article, the authors explore a theoretical approach to these fine phase mixtures based on the minimization of free energy and show that the α-phase breaks up into triangular domains called Dauphine twins which become finer and finer in the direction of increasing temperature.Abstract:
Solid-solid phase transformations often lead to certain characteristic microstructural features involving fine mixtures of the phases. In martensitic transformations one such feature is a plane interface which separates one homogeneous phase, austenite, from a very fine mixture of twins of the other phase, martensite. In quartz crystals held in a temperature gradient near the α-β transformation temperature, the α-phase breaks up into triangular domains called Dauphine twins which become finer and finer in the direction of increasing temperature. In this paper we explore a theoretical approach to these fine phase mixtures based on the minimization of free energy.read more

Lower semicontinuity and Young measures in BV without Alberti's Rank-One Theorem
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give a new proof of weak lower semicontinuity for integral functionals with a quasiconvex Caratheodory integrand with linear growth at infinity and such that the recession function exists in a strong sense and is (jointly) continuous.

The appearance of microstructures in problems with incompatible wells and their numerical approach
TL;DR: A case with strong incompatibility between the wells is considered, which forces the minimizing sequences to use other gradients than the wells in a puzzling way, to single out discrete minimizing sequences and to give energy estimates in terms of the mesh size.

Existence of minimizers for a variational problem in two-dimensional nonlinear magnetoelasticity
Antonio DeSimone,Georg Dolzmann +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors prove the existence of energy minimization configurations for a two-dimensional, variational model of magnetoelastic materials capable of large deformations based on an energy functional which is the sum of the nonlocal self-energy (the energy stored in the magnetic field generated by the body, and permeating the whole ambient space) and the local anisotropy energy, which is not weakly lower semicontinuous.
