Fractal signature and lacunarity in the measurement of the texture of trabecular bone in clinical CT images

TLDR
The fractal signatures of small regions of interest (32x32 pixels), computed in the frequency domain after corrections for imaging system noise and MTF, were able to characterize the texture of vertebral trabecular bone in CT images.

Journal ArticleDOI

Lacunarity analysis of spatial pattern in CT images of vertebral trabecular bone for assessing osteoporosis.

TL;DR: Results suggest that derived parameters such as the maximum deviation of the lacunarity from a neutral (fractal) model, and the maximum derivative of this deviation, may have diagnostic value in characterizing osteoporosis and predicting fracture risk.
Journal ArticleDOI

A quantitative assessment of carbon nanotube dispersion in polymer matrices

TL;DR: This work presents a methodology for using scanning electron microscope images of nanocomposites taken under high accelerating voltages to quantify four parameters that relate to the dispersion of the nanomaterial.

Fractal dimension as a prognostic factor for laryngeal carcinoma.

TL;DR: Within the sample of patients studied, FD could be used as a prognostic factor and patients with a FD lower than the median value of the sample, estimated in sections of carcinomas, had statistically significant higher survival rates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Texture appearance characterization of pre-sliced pork ham images using fractal metrics: Fourier analysis dimension and lacunarity

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the potential usefulness of two fractal metrics based on fast Fourier transform and gliding box lacunarity as descriptors of visual texture in ham slices.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nuclear fractal dimension as a prognostic factor in oral squamous cell carcinoma

TL;DR: Within the sample of patients studied, FD was proved to be an independent prognostic factor of survival in oral cancer patients and there are several statistically significant correlations between FD and other morphometric characteristics or clinicopathologic factors in oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Fractal-Based Description of Natural Scenes

TL;DR: The3-D fractal model provides a characterization of 3-D surfaces and their images for which the appropriateness of the model is verifiable and this characterization is stable over transformations of scale and linear transforms of intensity.

A microtomographic system for the nondestructive evaluation of bone architecture

TL;DR: The system described in this work is based on a compact fan-beam type tomograph that can work in spiral scanning or multislice mode, and 3D stereological indices are extracted according to the standard definitions used in histomorphometry.
