TLDR
In this article, the authors used regional patterns of present-day tectonic stress to evaluate the forces acting on the lithosphere and to investigate intraplate seismicity, and found that most intraplate regions are characterized by a compressional stress regime; extension is limited almost entirely to thermally uplifted regions.Abstract:
Regional patterns of present-day tectonic stress can be used to evaluate the forces acting on the lithosphere and to investigate intraplate seismicity. Most intraplate regions are characterized by a compressional stress regime; extension is limited almost entirely to thermally uplifted regions. In several plates the maximum horizontal stress is subparallel to the direction of absolute plate motion, suggesting that the forces driving the plates also dominate the stress distribution in the plate interior.read more

In situ stress determination from breakouts in the Tornquist Fan, Denmark
TL;DR: The Tornquist Fan, a fan-shaped region in Denmark and Western Baltic, is situated in the transition zone between the Western and Northern European Stress Provinces as mentioned in this paper, which can be divided into three stress provinces: (i) the area south of the Romo Fracture Zone is part of the Western European Stress Province and has NNW-SSE orientation of the maximum horizontal stress, (ii) the sediment cover in the Nonvegian-Danish Basin is dominated by ENE-WSW orientated maximum horizontal stresses, and (iii) the peak of the

Three dimensional tectonic stress field in North China
TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors built a 3D tectonic stress field model in North China and simulated the 3D stress field pattern of North China by finite element method, and analyzed the overall characteristics and regional specific feature.

Contemporary stress and strain field in the Mediterranean from stress inversion of focal mechanisms and GPS data
TL;DR: In this article, the orientation of the largest horizontal shortening axis of the strain field from potency tensors, and horizontal strain rate tensor from GPS data are generally sub-parallel to SHmax orientation, indicating a linear stress/strain relationship.
Major Fracture Zones inFiskarfjärden, Stockholm
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed and classified available geological data, identify and model the major fracture zones situated in the water passage, investigate the kinematics of the fractures focusing on the relative movement between the blocks, if possible, determine the stress orientation and, predict how these major fractures will affect the Stockholm Bypass rock tunnel.

Can deformation of a polymer film with a rigid coating model geophysical processes
A. L. Volynskii,S. L. Bazhenov +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the structural and mechanical behavior of polymer films with a thin rigid coating is analyzed and the behavior of such systems under applied stress is accompanied by the formation of a regular wavy surface relief and by regular fragmentation of the coating.

An analysis of the variation of ocean floor bathymetry and heat flow with age
Barry Parsons,John G. Sclater +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple cooling model and the plate model were proposed to account for the variation in depth and heat flow with increasing age of the ocean floor. But the results were limited to the North Pacific and North Atlantic basins.
Present-day plate motions
TL;DR: A data set comprising 110 spreading rates, 78 transform fault azimuths, and 142 earthquake slip vectors has been inverted to yield a new instantaneous plate motion model, designated Relative Motion 2 (RM2).

On the Relative Importance of the Driving Forces of Plate Motion
Donald W. Forsyth,Seiya Uyedaf +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the relative strength of the plausible driving forces, given the observed motions and geometries of the lithospheric plates, was analyzed. But the results indicate that the forces acting on the downgoing slab control the velocity of the oceanic plates and are an order of magnitude stronger than any other force.
