Journal ArticleDOI

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malaria: greater resistance of females heterozygous for enzyme deficiency and of males with non-deficient variant

TL;DR: In this paper, the genotype for the red-cell enzyme, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, was determined in 700 children of both sexes from a rural area of holo-endemic malaria (P. falciparum ), who presented to hospital because of an acute febrile illness.
Journal ArticleDOI

Haemoglobin-E in the presence of oxidative substances from fava bean may be protective against Plasmodium falciparum malaria

TL;DR: The study suggests a possible synergistic protective effect of haemoglobin E on the risk of P. falciparum malaria in subjects who have consumed fava beans.
Book ChapterDOI

Recent advances in the chemotherapy of malaria.

TL;DR: It is concluded that malaria remains the major threat to life and one of the most serious public health problems in the underdeveloped nations.

Frequency of Glucose-6-Phosphate Deficiency and Malaria in Tanga Region, North-Eastern Tanzania

TL;DR: The study did not demonstrate a protective effect of G-6-PD deficiency against malarial infection and in vivo and in vitro drug sensitivity study in north eastern Tanzania showed no difference between heterozygous, homozygous and hemizygous children.

Journal ArticleDOI

Glucose-6-Phosphate-Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Sickling, and Malaria in African Children in South Western Nigeria.

TL;DR: The results obtained support the hypotheses that G.-6-P.D. deficiency and haemoglobin S offer a selective advantage to the carrier against potentially lethal malaria infection and Haemoglobin C offers no such advantage.
Journal ArticleDOI

Malaria in African Children with Deficient Erythrocyte Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase

TL;DR: Noisy pneumothorax is a benign condition, usually occurring in young healthy males, and is invariably leftsided, but it is rarely recognized because of the absence of Hamman's sign and lack of proximity of the pain to the praecordium.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blood examination and prognosis in acute falciparum malaria.

TL;DR: Analysis of this material shows a close relation between the death-rate and the peripheral concentration of parasites at the time treatment began, and Parasite counts made at this time were more reliable than clinical judgment as a guide to prognosis.
