In recent years, renewed attention has been paid to the mechanisms of group decision making that underlie the nest-site selection process in honey bees. We review the results of these new investigations by discussing how the recent work builds on the earlier descriptive studies of this decision-making process, how the decision-making abilities of swarms have been tested, and how the mechanisms of this decision- making process have been experimentally analyzed. We conclude by discussing how the scouts in a swarm sense when their group decision making is coming to an end and so should begin stimulating their quiescent swarm-mates to prepare for the flight to their new home. Quorum sensing signal–response systems in Gram-negative bacteria

TL;DR: This Review examines how features of quorum sensing signal–response systems combine to control collective behaviours in Gram-negative bacteria and the implications for host–microbial associations and antibacterial therapy.

Consensus decision making in animals

TL;DR: It is concluded that consensus decision making is common in non-human animals, and that cooperation between group members in the decision-making process is likely to be the norm, even when the decision involves significant conflict of interest.

The biological principles of swarm intelligence
TL;DR: The underlying mechanisms of complex collective behaviors of social insects, from the concept of stigmergy to the theory of self-organization in biological systems, are described and four functions that emerge at the level of the colony and that organize its global behavior are proposed.

TL;DR: It is shown that under most conditions, the costs to subordinate group members, and to the group as a whole, are considerably higher for despotic than for democratic decisions.
