TLDR
There is little sufficient or consistent evidence suggesting that it is independently associated with processes or outcomes of diabetes-related care, and it may be premature to routinely screen for low health literacy as a means for improving diabetes- related health-related outcomes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Low health literacy is considered a potential barrier to improving health outcomes in people with diabetes and other chronic conditions, although the evidence has not been previously systematically reviewed.

Health Literacy and Cardiovascular Disease: Fundamental Relevance to Primary and Secondary Prevention: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

TL;DR: Inadequate health literacy is a barrier to the American Heart Association meeting its 2020 Impact Goals, and this statement articulates the rationale to anticipate and address the adverse cardiovascular effects associated with health literacy.

Psychosocial factors in medication adherence and diabetes self-management: Implications for research and practice.

TL;DR: Recommendations are made for continued research emphasis on improving psychosocial aspects of living with diabetes, with greater attention to the situational context in which the self-regulatory processes underlying self-management occur.

Science Literacy: Concepts, Contexts, and Consequences

TL;DR: Science literacy is desirable not only for individuals, but also for the health and well-being of communities and society as discussed by the authors. But science literacy has traditionally been seen as the responsibility of individuals, and, as a result, individual science literacy is limited or enhanced by the circumstances of that nesting.

The Literacy Divide: Health Literacy and the Use of an Internet-Based Patient Portal in an Integrated Health System—Results from the Diabetes Study of Northern California (DISTANCE)

TL;DR: Diabetes patients reporting limited health literacy were less likely to both access and navigate an internet-based patient portal than those with adequate health literacy, and those most at risk for poor diabetes health outcomes will fall further behind if health systems increasingly rely on internet- based services.

Literacy and Child Health: A Systematic Review

TL;DR: Low caregiver literacy is common and is associated with poor preventive care behaviors and poor child health outcomes, and future research should aim to ameliorate literacy-associated child health disparities.

Does literacy mediate the relationship between education and health outcomes? A study of a low-income population with diabetes.

TL;DR: In a low-income population with diabetes, literacy mediated the relationship between education and glycemic control, with important implications for both education and health policy.

Association of Health Literacy With Self-Management Behavior in Patients With Diabetes

TL;DR: To determine whether diabetes education improves self-management behaviors in patients with limited compared with adequate health literacy, a prospective observational study of patients enrolled in diabetes education classes at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was conducted.

Associations between health literacy, diabetes knowledge, self-care behaviors, and glycemic control in a low income population with type 2 diabetes.

TL;DR: Diabetes knowledge and perceived health status are the most important factors associated with glycemic control in this population of type 2 diabetes and health literacy appears to exert its influence through diabetes knowledge and is not directly related to self-care or medication adherence.
