TLDR
Hyperacetylation of H4 and rapid turnover of its acetyl groups could be correlated with the particular conformation of chromatin in elongated spermatids and might represent a necessary condition for binding of chromosomal proteins to DNA.Abstract:
In order to study the relationship between acetylation of histones, chromatin structure and gene activity, the distribution and turnover of acetyl groups among nucleosomal core histones and the extent of histone H4 acetylation were examined in rooster testis cell nuclei at different stages of spermatogenesis. Histone H4 was the predominant acetylated histone in mature testes. Hyperacetylation of H4 and rapid turnover of its acetyl groups are not univocally correlated with transcriptional activity since they were detected in both genetically active testicular cells and genetically inactive elongated spermatids. During the transition from nucleohistone to nucleoprotamine in elongated spermatids the chromatin undergoes dramatic structural changes with exposition of binding sites on DNA (1). Hyperacetylation of H4 and rapid turnover of its acetyl groups could be correlated with the particular conformation of chromatin in elongated spermatids and might represent a necessary condition for binding of chromosomal proteins to DNA.read more

Protamines and male infertility.
TL;DR: The present work reviews the articles published to date on the relationship between protamines and infertility and finds evidence that altered levels of protamines may result in an increased susceptibility to injury in the spermatozoan DNA causing infertility or poor outcomes in assisted reproduction.

TL;DR: The fact that distinctive amino acids, such as threonine or valine, present in chicken protamine polypeptides, are conserved in position in the amino acid sequence of quail only if the sequence redetermined by Oliva and Dixon is considered, makes the probability of different allelic variants in chicken much less likely.

Altered protamine expression and diminished spermatogenesis: what is the link?
TL;DR: Two hypotheses are suggested: (i) that abnormal protamine expression is indicative of a generalized defect in mRNA storage and/or translation which affects other mRNA transcripts or (ii) that protamines may act as a checkpoint of spermatogenesis.

TL;DR: It is observed that recombinant BRDT was capable of inducing reorganization of the chromatin of isolated nuclei in vitro only when the nuclei were from TSA-treated cells, the first demonstration of a large-scale reorganizations of acetylated chromatin induced by a specific factor.

Remodeling of nucleoproteins during gametogenesis, fertilization, and early development.
TL;DR: This chapter reviews the transformation of nucleoprotein types during gametogenesis, fertilization, and early development, outlines chromatin structural changes that accompany these nucleop protein transitions, and discusses some functions of the nucleoproteins and histone variants associated with gamete, zygote, andEarly embryonic nuclei.
