TLDR
In this paper, a modified plasticity chart and a multi-parameter criteria are presented to identify the expansive soils according to the degree of their expansivity, and a hazard map is presented showing areas of potential danger from expansive soils to light engineering structures.

A simple test and predictive models for assessing swell potential of Ankara (Turkey) Clay

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive research program has been conducted to investigate the effect of remoulding and desiccation on the swelling behavior of Ankara Clay and its swelling anisotropy, to estimate depth of active zone, and to develop a simple technique in determining the magnitude of swelling based on water content of the soaked specimen after 24 and 72 h ( w max24,72 ), and to produce predictive models which could be used to estimate the swelling potential of Ankara clay from its mineralogical and measured engineering characteristics.

Relationships between shrinkage indices and soil properties in some New Zealand soils

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the shrinkage potential of different New Zealand soils using the Coefficient of Linear Extensibility (COLE) and examine relationships between soil shrinkage and selected chemical, physical and mineralogical soil properties.

Quantifying engineering parameters of expansive soils from their reflectance spectra

TL;DR: In this paper, a multivariate calibration method, partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis, through simple wavelength approach, was used to construct empirical prediction models for estimating engineering parameters of expansive soils from their respective reflectance spectra.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of Amorphous Clay-Size Materials on Soil Plasticity and Shrink-Swell Behavior

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors quantify the amorphous clay-size materials in less weathered volcanic soils that are rich in silica, and determine the influence of the ammorphous materials on plasticity and shrink-swell behavior of these soils.
Journal ArticleDOI

Investigation of expansive soils in Obhor Sabkha, Jeddah-Saudi Arabia

TL;DR: In this paper, the geotechnical properties, active clay mineral types, and the degree expansion potential of soils were investigated in Obhor area at the north of Jeddah City.

Engineering Properties of Expansive Clays

TL;DR: Expansive clay soils have been encountered at the sites of structures throughout the western United States as discussed by the authors, where most of these structures are hydraulic, and the normal difficulties encountered w...

Review of Expansive Soils

TL;DR: In this article, it has been estimated that the annual cost of damage from expansive clay subsoil in the United States alone is $23 billion, and appropriate correction action may include stabilization by chemical means, presaturation, compaction, and the design of engineered-type foundations.

Interrelationship of load, volume change, and layer thicknesses of soils to the behavior of engineering structures

TL;DR: In this paper, an attempt was made to compare most of the VARIABLES NECESSARY to formulating an approach to the VERTICAL MOVEMENT of the Earth's surface caused by the shrinking and swelling of soils.
