TLDR
The effects of detergents on the size of shed I- Ak and H-2Kk and the coprecipitation of (3H) lipids with these proteins suggest that I-Ak and H the 2Kk are shed in association with local membrane lipids as small membrane-derived vesicles, whereas membrane IgM is shed without detectable associated lipid.Abstract:
The form of 125I-labeled membrane alloantigens (I-Ak and H-2Kk) and immunoglobulin M shed by murine splenic lymphocytes labeled by lactoperoxidase-catalyzed radioiodination was determined by gel chromatography and ultracentrifugation. I-Ak and H-2Kk antigens are shed as particles ranging in size from 3 X 10(5) to 2 X 10(6), whereas membrane IgM is shed as an individual unit consonant with its native size of 180,000. The effects of detergents on the size of shed I-Ak and H-2Kk and the coprecipitation of (3H) lipids with these proteins suggest that I-Ak and H-2Kk are shed in association with local membrane lipids as small membrane-derived vesicles, whereas membrane IgM is shed without detectable associated lipid.read more

TL;DR: It is demonstrated by immunoelectron microscopy that the limiting membrane of MIICs can fuse directly with the plasma membrane, resulting in release from the cells of internal MHC class II-containing vesicles, suggesting a role for exosomes in antigen presentation in vivo.

TL;DR: Using a systematic proteomic approach, the first extensive protein map of a particular exosome population is established and a novel category of exosomal proteins related to apoptosis is identified: thioredoxin peroxidase II, Alix, 14-3-3, and galectin-3.

Exosome: from internal vesicle of the multivesicular body to intercellular signaling device.
TL;DR: Exosomes are small membrane vesicles that are secreted by a multitude of cell types as a consequence of fusion of multivesicular late endosomes/lysosomes with the plasma membrane.
COMMENTARY Exosome: from internal vesicle of the multivesicular body to intercellular signaling device
TL;DR: F follicular dendritic cells have recently been shown to bind B-lymphocyte-derived exosome at their cell surface, which supports the notion that exosomes play an immunoregulatory role, and their molecular composition might provide clues to the mechanism of protein and lipid sorting in endosomes.

Allogeneic Stimulation of Cytotoxic T Cells by Supported Planar Membranes
TL;DR: Cytotoxic T cells induced by purified alloantigen are found to be as susceptible to antibody blockade as are effectors from conventional mixed lymphocyte culture, where the antibody is directed against a T-cell surface antigen reputed to strengthen target cell adhesion through an interaction independent of major histocompatibility antigens.
