In this article, a passage to the limit of the usual friction law for one degree of freedom solid where the dynamical friction coefficient is smaller than the static friction coefficient was studied, and it was shown that this law can lose all predictive power.
Abstract
We study a usual friction law for one degree of freedom solid where the dynamical friction coefficient is smaller than the static friction coefficient. We show that this law can be dangerous, because it can lose all predictive power. We first study a passage to the limit to prove that the limit is strongly depending on the data. We secondly study the obtained limit law, which is written with a non maximal monotone multivalued graph; this property implies that the differential inclusion possesses a set of solutions, whose diameter is too big to know the solution with precision. Moreover, the associated numerical scheme does not have a unique solution.

Dynamics and bifurcations of nonsmooth systems: A survey

TL;DR: In this article, the main focus is on piecewise smooth systems, which have recently attracted a lot of attention, but also briefly discuss other important classes of nonsmooth systems such as nowhere differentiable ones and differential variational inequalities.

The Painlevé paradox in contact mechanics

TL;DR: The ubiquity of the \pain paradox is highlighted and open problems are discussed, including a Poisson or energetic impact law, and strategies to resolve the paradox via contact regularisation are discussed.

The Painleve paradox in contact mechanics

TL;DR: In this article, a general formulation of the forward evolution problem in 2D with a single point of contact is discussed and cases or inconsistency or indeterminacy enumerated, and a partial review is given of 2D cases with two points of contact showing how a greater complexity of inconsistency and ambiguity can arise.

Elliptic inequalities with multi-valued operators: Existence, comparison and related variational–hemivariational type inequalities

TL;DR: In this paper, the existence of extremal solutions for variational-hemivariational type inequalities was proved for a class of variational inequalities whose Clarke's generalized directional derivative may discontinuously depend on the function we are looking for.

Quasilinear parabolic variational inequalities with multi-valued lower-order terms

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical frame work for the following multi-valued parabolic variational inequality in a cylindrical domain is provided, where it is shown that the solution set within the sector of sub-supersolutions is a directed set.

Rigid-Body Dynamics with Friction and Impact

TL;DR: This paper presents rigorous results about rigid-body dynamics with Coulomb friction and impulses, which have come from several sources: "sweeping processes" and the measure differential inclusions of Moreau in the 1970s and 1980s, the variational inequality approaches of Duvaut and J.-L.

Dynamics of mechanical systems with Coulomb friction, stiction, impact and constraint addition-deletion—I theory

TL;DR: In this article, a unified formulation of the equations of motion for constrained multibody systems with Coulomb friction, stiction, impact and constraint addition-deletion is presented, where basic variational principles of mechanics are used for derivation of the governing equations of each of the physical modes of behaviour considered.
