In this paper, the initial entrainment characteristics of fine bed sand are objectively defined in terms of the measured distributions of critical instantaneous bed shear stress associated with the observed movement of individual surface grains.
Abstract
The initial entrainment characteristics of fine bed sand are objectively defined in terms of the measured distributions of critical instantaneous bed shear stress associated with the observed movement of individual surface grains. Critical flow conditions are then predicted by equating the lower extremes in these characteristic critical shear stress distributions to the upper extremes in the distribution of instantaneous bed shear stress produced by the particular type of background flow under consideration. The method is applied to the case of two-dimensional channel flow over a flat bed and yields sufficiently consistent results to suggest an extension to Shields' curve for small grain Reynolds numbers. The detailed experimental observations clearly illustrate the important role played by bed region turbulence in the interaction process between the fluid and the mobile bed grains constituting the deformable boundary.

Direct numerical simulation of bedload transport using a local, dynamic boundary condition

TL;DR: In this article, a model of bedload transport is presented that directly integrates the equations of motion of each particle of a simulated mixed grain-size sediment bed, and an empirical relation for the velocity modification resulting from upstream grains is provided to the bedload model.

A model for fluvial bedrock incision by impacting suspended and bed load sediment

TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanistic model is derived for the rate of fluvial erosion into bedrock by abrasion from uniform size particles that impact the bed during transport in both bed and suspended load.

Entrainment and motion of coarse particles in a shallow water stream down a steep slope

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the entrainment, deposition and motion of coarse spherical particles within a turbulent shallow water stream down a steep slope and developed a birth-death immigration-emigration Markov process to describe the particle exchanges between the bed and the water stream.

Macroturbulent structure of open-channel flow over gravel beds

TL;DR: In this article, the turbulent structure of open-channel flow over a mobile gravel bed was investigated in an 8 m long, 0.3 m wide, and 0. 3 m deep tilting flume.
