Investigation of Mathematical Modelling to Assess the Performance of Solar Flat Plate Collector

TLDR
In this paper, the performance of solar flat plate water heater has been evaluated using a customized standard test rig and a theoretical model and the results showed that the efficiency of the solar collector system will decrease with increase of wind speed.
Abstract
A study was under taken to assess the performance of solar flat plate water heater. A customized standard test rig was used for the performance study. Heat transfer phenomena in the collector system were calculated by using theoretical model. From the study it was found that various parameters have effects on the performance of the solar collector system are as follows. In order to improve the thermal efficiency of the solar collector system, inlet water temperature should be as low as possible. The efficiency is increases more or less linearly with ambient temperature. Increasing the thickness of insulation beyond 5 cm is worthless. Efficiency of the solar collector system will decreases with increase of wind speed. Transmission ratio of glass cover should be more than 0.95 in order to obtain higher thermal efficiency of the collector. If ambient temperature increases there will be higher efficiency of solar collector system because of less heat loss to thesurroundings.

Exergetic optimization of flat plate solar collectors

TL;DR: In this paper, an exergetic optimization of flat plate solar collectors is developed to determine the optimal performance and design parameters of these solar to thermal energy conversion systems, where the following geometric and operating parameters are considered as variables: the absorber plate area, dimensions of solar collector, pipes' diameter, mass flow rate, fluid inlet, outlet temperature, etc.

Evaluation of heat loss coefficients in solar flat plate collectors

TL;DR: In this paper, a flat plate collector is used for domestic hot-water, space heating/drying and for applications requiring fluid temperature less than 100 o C. The collector efficiency is dependent on the temperature of the plate which in turn depends on the nature of flow of fluid inside the tube, solar insolation, ambient temperature, top loss coefficient, the emissivity of plate and glass cover, slope, etc.
