Investigation of the mesoscopic scale response of low-density pressings of granular sugar under impact

TLDR
The mesoscopic scale response of low-density pressings of granular sugar (sucrose) to shock loading has been examined in gas-gun impact experiments using both VISAR and a line-imaging, optically recording velocity interferometer system in combination with large-volume-element, high-resolution, three-dimensional numerical simulations of these tests as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract
The mesoscopic scale response of low-density pressings of granular sugar (sucrose) to shock loading has been examined in gas-gun impact experiments using both VISAR and a line-imaging, optically recording velocity interferometer system in combination with large-volume-element, high-resolution, three-dimensional numerical simulations of these tests. Time-resolved and spatially resolved measurements of material motion in waves transmitted by these pressings have been made as a function of impact velocity, sample thickness, and sample particle size distribution. Observed wave profiles exhibit a precursor regime arising from elastic stress wave propagation and a dispersive compaction wave with superimposed localized particle velocity fluctuations of varying amplitude. Material motion associated with dynamic stress bridging leads compaction wave arrival by ∼2μs at the lowest impact velocity (0.25kms−1) employed in this study and <200ns at the higher values (0.7–0.8kms−1). Over the same range, the compaction wa...

Energy localization in HMX-Estane polymer-bonded explosives during impact loading

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report the results of a mechanistic study of energy localization in a high melting point eXplosive octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro (HPE) /Estane PBX system during dynamic loading, focusing on the thermalmechanical response over the strain rate range of 104 − 105 s−1 under different confinement conditions.

Pressure–temperature evolution of primordial solar system solids during impact-induced compaction

TL;DR: The data suggest a lithification mechanism for meteorites, and provide a ‘speed limit’ constraint on major compressive impacts that is inconsistent with recent models of solar system orbital architecture that require an early, rapid phase of main-belt collisional evolution.

Ignition criterion for heterogeneous energetic materials based on hotspot size-temperature threshold

TL;DR: In this article, a criterion for the ignition of granular explosives and polymer-bonded explosives under shock and non-shock loading is developed based on integration of a quantification of the distributions of the sizes and locations of hotspots in loading events.
