Taming the Chlorine Radical: Enforcing Steric Control over Chlorine-Radical-Mediated C-H Activation.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the secondary coordination sphere of a metal complex can confine photoeliminated chlorine radicals and afford steric control over their reactivity, and a series of iron(III) chloride pyridinediimine complexes exhibit activity for photochemical C(sp3)-H chlorination and bromination with selectivity for primary and secondary C-H bonds, overriding thermodynamic preference for weaker tertiary C- H bonds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Opportunistic use of tetrachloroaurate photolysis in the generation of reductive species for the production of gold nanostructures

TL;DR: The methodology reported here opens the door to particles that can be modified in situ or post-synthesis with custom surface covering without concern for chemical debris from the nanostructure synthesis, allowing a remarkably clean synthesis of gold nanostructures.

Photochemistry of α-phenoxyacetophenone: an interesting case of intramolecular triplet deactivation

TL;DR: In this paper, the α-Phenoxyacetophenone photodecomposes with a quantum yield of about 0.004 to yield C6H5COCH2 and C 6H5O; in spite of its low quantum yield the process is quite rapid, occurring with an estimated rate constant of 3 × 107 s−1.

Charge-transfer absorption spectra of chlorine atoms in halogenated solvents

TL;DR: The UV absorption spectrum of chlorine atoms has been measured in several halogenated solvents following 355 nm laser flash photolysis of molecular chlorine as discussed by the authors, and a linear correlation between band maxima and solvent ionization potential indicates the transitions are chlorine atom/solvent change-transfer absorptions.
