A new method for continuing two‐dimensional potential data upward from an uneven track is developed with special emphasis on solving a particular practical problem, that of magnetic data taken near the bottom of the ocean. The method is based on the use of the Schwarz‐Christoffel transformation, which maps the original, irregular track into a horizontal straight line. It has been found to be very fast computationally and to suffer none of the restrictions found in some earlier two‐dimensional algorithms.read more

The historical development of the magnetic method in exploration
Misac N. Nabighian,V.J.S. Grauch,R. O. Hansen,Thomas R. LaFehr,Yaoguo Li,J. W. Peirce,Jeffrey D. Phillips,M. E. Ruder +7 more
TL;DR: The magnetic method is the primary exploration tool in the search for minerals, oil and gas, geothermal resources, and groundwater, and for a variety of other purposes such as natural hazards assessment, mapping impact structures, and engineering and environmental studies as discussed by the authors.

The inversion of magnetic anomalies in the presence of topography
TL;DR: In this paper, the inversion of magnetic anomalies in terms of an irregular layer of magnetized material is studied, and an efficient procedure for constructing solutions is developed, but the solution is not unique because of the existence of a magnetization (called the magnetic annihilator) that produces no observable magnetic field.

TL;DR: The gravity method was the first geophysical technique to be used in oil and gas exploration and has continued to be an important and sometimes crucial constraint in a number of exploration areas as discussed by the authors.

TL;DR: A deeply towed instrument package was used to survey the fine details of topography, sediment distribution, and magnetization of the Gorda rise, an active spreading center off northern California as discussed by the authors.

The Galapagos Spreading Centre: A Near-Bottom Geophysical Survey
Kim D. Klitgord,John D. Mudie +1 more
TL;DR: The bathymetric relief is dominated by small blocks which tilt slightly away from the spreading center and which are bounded by inward-facing scarps as mentioned in this paper, which is similar to that found on slow-spreading ridges, but on a smaller scale.
