TLDR
In this paper, the impact of agricultural expansion on regional landscape patterns and non-point source (NPS) pollution was analyzed synchronously using the Landsat series images, and the landscape pattern was also analyzed with FRAGSTATS.

Fertilizers and nitrate pollution of surface and ground water: an increasingly pervasive global problem

TL;DR: A review of the research information generated during the last two decades from all over the world on different aspects of nitrate pollution of natural water bodies is presented in this article, where it is shown that not more than 50% of the fertilizer N is directly used by the crops to which it is applied while a small portion may directly leach down and may reach ground and surface water bodies, a large proportion ends up in the soil organic N pool from where N is mineralized and is taken up by plants and/or lost via leaching during several decades.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spatiotemporal patterns and source attribution of nitrogen load in a river basin with complex pollution sources.

TL;DR: The study results suggest the need to shift the focus of N load reduction from "end-of-pipe" sewage treatment to an integrated approach emphasizing stakeholder involvement and source prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI

Source identification and impact of landscape pattern on riverine nitrogen pollution in a typical urbanized watershed, Beijing, China

TL;DR: Results from multiple stepwise regression indicated that the typical artificial land use types and landscape configuration metrics reflecting landscape fragmentation related well with riverine nitrogen variables for different seasons, whereas the interspersion and juxtaposition index of forest land was negatively related with nitrate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spatial identification and dynamic analysis of land use functions reveals distinct zones of multiple functions in eastern China.

TL;DR: A new LUFs classification system is proposed based on spatial planning goals, and this system was applied to assess 12 Lufs across 63 counties in Jiangsu Province of eastern China based on multi-source data using geospatial modeling tools combined with statistical analysis of socioeconomic data.
Journal ArticleDOI

Landscape patterns regulate non-point source nutrient pollution in an agricultural watershed.

TL;DR: The results show that landscape pattern significantly affects river water quality, and this effect was quite different in dry and rainy seasons.

River flow forecasting through conceptual models part I — A discussion of principles☆

TL;DR: In this article, the principles governing the application of the conceptual model technique to river flow forecasting are discussed and the necessity for a systematic approach to the development and testing of the model is explained and some preliminary ideas suggested.

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Biodiversity

TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that the term "fragmentation" should be reserved for the breaking apart of habitat, independent of habitat loss, and that fragmentation per se has much weaker effects on biodiversity that are at least as likely to be positive as negative.

Geomorphic/Tectonic Control of Sediment Discharge to the Ocean: The Importance of Small Mountainous Rivers

TL;DR: In this paper, data from 280 rivers discharging to the ocean indicates that sediment loads/yields are a log-linear function of basin area and maximum elevation of the river basin.

Agricultural abandonment in mountain areas of Europe: Environmental consequences and policy response

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative analysis of European mountain case studies to assess the environmental impacts of land abandonment and decline in traditional farming practices is presented, while the influence of environmental changes is unpredictable due to environmental, agricultural and socio-economic contextual factors, abandonment generally has an undesirable effect on the environmental parameters examined.

Parsimony in landscape metrics: Strength, universality, and consistency

TL;DR: This study identified independent components of class- and landscape-level structure in multiple landscapes in each of three large and geographically disjunct study areas and calculated the universality, strength, and consistency of these components.
