Nonlinear interdependencies of EEG signals in human intracranially recorded temporal lobe seizures

TLDR
The results suggest that the nonlinear associations plays an important role in epileptogenesis, and that the process of neuronal entrainment during seizure onset involves a transient interaction between a distributed network of neuronal aggregates, but the maintenance of this interaction is not required for sustained seizure activity.

Nonlinear dynamical analysis of EEG and MEG: Review of an emerging field

TL;DR: Interpretation of results in terms of 'functional sources' and 'functional networks' allows the identification of three basic patterns of brain dynamics: normal, ongoing dynamics during a no-task, resting state in healthy subjects, and hypersynchronous, highly nonlinear dynamics of epileptic seizures and degenerative encephalopathies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nonlinear multivariate analysis of neurophysiological signals

TL;DR: This work describes the multivariate linear methods most commonly used in neurophysiology and shows that they can be extended to assess the existence of nonlinear interdependence between signals and describes nonlinear methods based on the concepts of phase synchronization, generalized synchronization and event synchronization.

Reply to ``Comment on `Performance of different synchronization measures in real data: A case study on electroencephalographic signals' ''

TL;DR: It is claimed that the applied measures used in the synchronization between left and right hemisphere rat electroencephalographic channels are valuable for the study of synchronization in real data and in the particular case of EEG signals their use as complementary variables could be of clinical relevance.

Performance of different synchronization measures in real data: A case study on electroencephalographic signals

TL;DR: In this article, the synchronization between left and right hemisphere rat electroencephalographic (EEG) channels by using various synchronization measures, namely nonlinear interdependences, phase synchronizations, mutual information, cross correlation, and the coherence function, was studied.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synchronization likelihood: an unbiased measure of generalized synchronization in multivariate data sets

TL;DR: This work proposes a novel measure for generalized synchronization in multivariate data sets which avoids this bias and can deal with non-stationary dynamics.

Testing for nonlinearity in time series: the method of surrogate data

TL;DR: In this article, a statistical approach for identifying nonlinearity in time series is described, which first specifies some linear process as a null hypothesis, then generates surrogate data sets which are consistent with this null hypothesis and finally computes a discriminating statistic for the original and for each of the surrogate sets.

Testing for nonlinearity in time series: The method of surrogate data

TL;DR: A statistical approach for identifying nonlinearity in time series which is demonstrated for numerical data generated by known chaotic systems, and applied to a number of experimental time series, which arise in the measurement of superfluids, brain waves, and sunspots.

Generalized synchronization of chaos in directionally coupled chaotic systems

TL;DR: A generalization of this condition, which equates dynamical variables from one subsystem with a function of the variables of another subsystem, which means that synchronization implies a collapse of the overall evolution onto a subspace of the system attractor in full space.

Generalized synchronization, predictability, and equivalence of unidirectionally coupled dynamical systems.

TL;DR: Necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of generalized synchronization of unidirectionally coupled dynamical systems are given in terms of asymptotic stability and the existence of generalized synchronized systems in the case of parameter mismatch between coupled systems leads to a new interpretation of recent experimental results.
