Optimal Monetary Policy with Staggered Wage and Price Contracts
TLDR
In this article, the unconditional expectation of average household utility is expressed in terms of the unconditional variances of the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation, where the model exhibits a tradeoff between stabilizing output gap and price inflation.Abstract:
We formulate an optimizing-agent model in which both labor and product markets exhibit monopolistic competition and staggered nominal contracts. The unconditional expectation of average household utility can be expressed in terms of the unconditional variances of the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation. Monetary policy cannot replicate the Pareto-optimal equilibrium that would occur under completely flexible wages and prices; that is, the model exhibits a tradeoff between stabilizing the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation. The Pareto optimum is attainable only if either wages or prices are completely flexible. For reasonable calibrations of the model, we characterize the optimal policy rule. Furthermore, strict price inflation targeting is clearly suboptimal, whereas rules that also respond to either the output gap or wage inflation are nearly optimal.read more

(Un)anticipated Monetary policy in a DSGE model with a shadow banking system (Bank of Finland Research Discussion Paper 4/2013)
TL;DR: This article showed that the U.S. boom-bust was caused by the combination of interest rates that were too low for too long, excessive optimism and a failure of agents to anticipate the extent of abnormally favourable conditions.

Optimal Simple Rules for the Conduct of Monetary and Fiscal Policy
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a model enabling them to characterize systematic simple monetary and fiscal policy over the business cycle and find that conducting stabilization policy incorporates not only a set of monetary policy choices governed by the so-called Taylor principle, but also fiscal policy that gives considerable force to automatic stabilizers.

Monetary Policy Regime Shifts: New Evidence from Time-Varying Interest Rate Rules
TL;DR: In this article, the authors estimate forward-looking interest-rate rules for five large OECD economies, allowing for time variation in the responses to macroeconomic conditions and in the variance of the policy rate.

How important is precommitment for monetary policy
Richard Dennis,Ulf Söderström +1 more
TL;DR: The authors quantifies the welfare differential between precommitment and discretionary policy in both a stylized theoretical framework and in estimated data-consistent models, showing that the existence of transmission lags and/or information lags is crucial for determining the welfare gain from pre-commitment.

Discretion versus policy rules in practice
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine how recent econometric policy evaluation research on monetary policy rules can be applied in a practical policymaking environment, and the discussion centers around a hypothetical but representative policy rule much like that advocated in recent research.
