Optimal Monetary Policy with Staggered Wage and Price Contracts

TLDR
In this article, the unconditional expectation of average household utility is expressed in terms of the unconditional variances of the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation, where the model exhibits a tradeoff between stabilizing output gap and price inflation.
Abstract
We formulate an optimizing-agent model in which both labor and product markets exhibit monopolistic competition and staggered nominal contracts. The unconditional expectation of average household utility can be expressed in terms of the unconditional variances of the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation. Monetary policy cannot replicate the Pareto-optimal equilibrium that would occur under completely flexible wages and prices; that is, the model exhibits a tradeoff between stabilizing the output gap, price inflation, and wage inflation. The Pareto optimum is attainable only if either wages or prices are completely flexible. For reasonable calibrations of the model, we characterize the optimal policy rule. Furthermore, strict price inflation targeting is clearly suboptimal, whereas rules that also respond to either the output gap or wage inflation are nearly optimal.

What Measure of Inflation Should a Developing Country Central Bank Target

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop an open economy model with incomplete financial markets to show that headline inflation targeting improves welfare outcomes, and compute the optimal price index, which includes a positive weight on food prices but, unlike headline inflation, assigns zero weight to import prices.

Trade, Unemployment, and Monetary Policy

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study how trade linkages affect the conduct of monetary policy in a two-country model with heterogeneous firms, endogenous producer entry, and labor market frictions, and show that the ability of the model to replicate key empirical regularities following trade integration is central to understanding how trade costs affect monetary policy trade-offs.

Alternative Perspectives on Optimal Public Debt Adjustment

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare alternative optimal public debt adjustment strategies in a New Keynesian economy and find that the un conditionally optimal policy is consistent with a gradual adjustment in public debt towards its mean value at a speed determined by the rate of time preference of agents.

Evaluating the role of capital controls and monetary policy in emerging market crises

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the role of policy commitment and macro-prudential motives in the design of optimal monetary and capital market responses to crises, under alternative exchange rate regimes, and find that policy commitment is very important under flexible exchange rates, but commitment is only of minor benefit under an exchange rate peg.

A Rebalancing Chinese Economy: Drivers and Challenges

TL;DR: This article argued that a rebalancing from a lop-sided investment-and export-driven pattern of growth towards more consumption-driven growth is already occurring in China, supported by a declining return to capital and a now-rising labour share of income.
