TLDR
Using the very-long-baseline interferometer, it is found that the unresolved radio core of 3C 66B shows well-defined elliptical motions with a period of 1.05 ± 0.03 years, which provides a direct detection of a supermassive black hole binary.
Abstract
Supermassive black hole binaries may exist in the centers of active galactic nuclei such as quasars and radio galaxies, and mergers between galaxies may result in the formation of supermassive binaries during the course of galactic evolution. Using the very-long-baseline interferometer, we imaged the radio galaxy 3C 66B at radio frequencies and found that the unresolved radio core of 3C 66B shows well-defined elliptical motions with a period of 1.05 ± 0.03 years, which provides a direct detection of a supermassive black hole binary.

Constraining sub-parsec binary supermassive black holes in quasars with multi-epoch spectroscopy. II. the population with kinematically offset broad balmer emission lines

TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of 399 quasars with kinematically offset broad Hβ lines from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Seventh Data Release quasar catalog was selected for second-epoch optical spectroscopy for 50 of them.

X‐shaped radio galaxies as observational evidence for the interaction of supermassive binary black holes and accretion disc at parsec scale

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the interaction of the supermassive binary black holes and an accretion disc and showed that the stalling can be avoided due to the interaction and a rapid coalescence of SMMBHs can be reached.

Modeling of Emission Signatures of Massive Black Hole Binaries. I. Methods

TL;DR: In this paper, the electromagnetic signatures of massive black hole binaries with an associated gas component are modeled with a modified version of the parallel tree SPH code Gadget and the heating, cooling, and radiative processes are calculated for two different physical scenarios, where the gas is approximated as a blackbody or a solar metallicity gas.

Obscured Binary Quasar Cores in SDSS J104807.74+005543.5?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported the discovery of a possible close binary system of quasars in SDSS J1048+0055, where two discrete radio sources with a projected physical separation of ~20 pc are found in the Very Long Baseline Array milliarcsecond resolution image at 8.4 GHz.

Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations of X‐shaped radio sources

TL;DR: In this article, a study of X-shaped sources based on observations using the giant metrewave radio telescope (GMRT) was conducted, which showed that the wings have flatter spectral indices than that of the active lobes.

Ultraluminous infrared galaxies and the origin of quasars

TL;DR: In this article, ground-based observations of a complete sample of 10 of these infrared galaxies suggest that they represent the initial dust-enshrouded stages of quasars, and a second group of ultraluminous objects selected on the basis of warm infrared colors are found to be preferentially Seyfert galaxies.

Massive black hole binaries in active galactic nuclei

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the possibility that some active galactic nuclei may contain two massive black holes in orbit about each other, which suggests a new interpretation for the observed bending and apparent precession of radio jets emerging from these objects.
