The mesomorphic properties of H2Pc octasubstituted with branched alkoxy chains were studied by DSC, polarization microscopy and X-ray diffraction.
Abstract
Phthalocyanines (H2Pc) octasubstituted with branched alkoxy chains were synthesized: 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24- octakis(3,7-dimethyloctoxy)phthalocyanine (1a) and 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(3,7,11-trimethyldodecoxy)phthalocyanine (1b). Their mesomorphic properties were studied by DSC, polarization microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Compound 1a, which was initially crystalline at room temperature, maintains its mesomorphic structure on cooling back to room temperature. Compound 1b is mesomorphic at room temperature. It shows a D ho→D hd transition at 34[ddot]C and a transition of unknown nature at 173[ddot]C. Both compounds display a D→I transition.

Discotic Liquid Crystals: From Tailor-Made Synthesis to Plastic Electronics

TL;DR: This Review will focus on the major classes of columnar mesogens rather than presenting a library of columner liquid crystals, and emphasis will be given to efficient synthetic procedures, and relevant mesomorphic and physical properties.

Liquid crystalline ordering and charge transport in semiconducting materials.

TL;DR: This review presents ways to systematically improve charge carrier mobility by proper variation of the electronic and steric structure of the constituting molecules and to reach charge carrier mobilities that are close to and comparable to amorphous silicon.

Membrane on a Chip: A Functional Tethered Lipid Bilayer Membrane on Silicon Oxide Surfaces

TL;DR: The synthesis of lipids for a more modular design and the adaptation of the linker part to silane chemistry are described and a functional tethered bilayer lipid membrane with good electrical sealing properties covering a silicon oxide surface is formed.

Preparation, metallation and alkylation of allenyl ethers

TL;DR: Propargyl ethers HCCCH2OR [R = alkyl or-CH(CH8)(OC2H5)] have been isomerized with good yields into the corresponding allenyl ether's CH2CCHOR by warming with potassium tert-butoxide at 70°.

Disc-Like Mesogen Polymorphism

TL;DR: In this article, a simple scheme of nomenclature is suggested for the six different types of columnar phase requiring only two structural parameters: firstly the symmetry of the lattice (hexagonal: Dh, rectangular: Dr, oblique: Dob), and secondly the order or disorder within the column.

Homologous series of liquid-crystalline metal free and copper octa-n-alkoxyphthalocyanines

TL;DR: In this article, two series of discotic liquid crystals, one based on metal-free and the other on copper containing phthalocyanine (Pc) as the central core and eight peripherally n-alkoxy groups (C6−C12) as substituents have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties and structural parameters have been determined.
