Inflammatory demyelinating peripheral neuropathies associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III infection.
David R. Cornblath,David R. Cornblath,Justin C. McArthur,Peter G. E. Kennedy,Arnold S. Witte,John W. Griffin +5 more
TL;DR: Nine patients with inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies (IDP) were found to have human T‐cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV‐III) infection, and it was found that treatment with either prednisone or plasmapheresis was followed by clinical improvement.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human immunodeficiency virus—associated myopathy: Analysis of 11 patients
David M. Simpson,Adam N. Bender +1 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest a distinct association between HIV infection and myopathy with features atypical for polymyositis, and Immunosuppressant therapy in 5 patients resulted in improvement.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrocortisone and some other hormones enhance the expression of HTLV-III.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that hydrocortisone, a readily available, inexpensive supplement to cell culture media, can facilitate the detection and isolation of HTLV‐III and a role for corticosteroids and possibly gonadal steroids in the modulation of virus expression and/or release is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Myopathies associated with human immunodeficiency virus and zidovudine: Can their effects be distinguished?
TL;DR: In the majority of patients with HIV-infected subjects referred for neuromuscular evaluation, myopathy is due to HIV rather than ZDV, and it is difficult to distinguish the myopathies of HIV andZDV by clinical or pathologic criteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
The neuromuscular manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infections.
TL;DR: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy was the first manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in both patients with this syndrome and both died from overwhelming sepsis within six months of the neuropathy's onset.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Ocular manifestations.
Gary N. Holland,Gary N. Holland,Jay S. Pepose,Thomas H. Pettit,Thomas H. Pettit,Michael S. Gottlieb,Robert D. Yee,Robert D. Yee,Robert Y. Foos,Robert Y. Foos +9 more
TL;DR: The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a recently described disorder of cellular immunity in homosexuals, intravenous drug abusers, and Haitians and the presence of cotton-wool spots in patients with this syndrome indicates a poor prognosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adverse Reactions to Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole in Patients with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
TL;DR: In patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole has a higher incidence of adverse reactions than pentamidine and appears earlier than toxicity associated withpentamidine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Associated focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
TL;DR: It is concluded that focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis may be associated with AIDS and suggest that rapid deterioration to uremia may characterize this renal disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autoimmune Thrombocytopenic Purpura in Homosexual Men
TL;DR: Some sexually-active homosexual men seem to have an increased incidence of an immune regulation disorder directed against platelets, as well as classic autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura in heterosexual persons.
