Abstract
A method is presented for classifying each pixel of a textured image, and thus for segmenting the scene. The "texture energy" approach requires only a few convolutions with small (typically 5x5) integer coefficient masks, followed by a moving-window absolute average operation. Normalization by the local mean and standard deviation eliminates the need for histogram equalization. Rotation-invariance can also be achieved by using averages of the texture energy features. The convolution masks are separable, and can be implemented with 1-dimensional (vertical and horizontal) or multipass 3x3 convolutions. Special techniques permit rapid processing on general-purpose digital computers.

Computer-aided diagnosis of dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus using endoscopic optical coherence tomography.

TL;DR: Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) algorithms have the potential to quantify and standardize the diagnosis of dysplasia and allows high throughput image evaluation for EOCT screening applications and with further refinements, CAD could also improve the accuracy of EO CT identification of Dysplasia in BE.

Analysis of texture in macroradiographs of osteoarthritic knees using the fractal signature.

TL;DR: Texture of regions of macroradiographs of six normal and five osteoarthritic knee joints, taken on a high resolution microfocal x-ray unit, are examined using mathematical morphology to indicate how images deviate from fractal surfaces.

Wavelet Feature Selection for Image Classification

TL;DR: In this paper, the dependence between features from different subbands is investigated theoretically and simulated for a given image model and a wavelet feature selection algorithm based on statistical dependence is proposed.

River mapping from a flying robot: state estimation, river detection, and obstacle mapping

TL;DR: A multimodal perception system for the active exploration and mapping of a river from a small rotorcraft that uses computer vision, laser scanning, inertial sensing and intermittant GPS to estimate the motion of the rotorcraft, detect the river without a prior map, and create a 3D map of the riverine environment.

Preoperative prediction of sentinel lymph node metastasis in breast cancer by radiomic signatures from dynamic contrast‐enhanced MRI

TL;DR: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) status is an important prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer, which is currently determined in clinical practice by invasive SLN biopsy.

Textural Features for Image Classification

TL;DR: These results indicate that the easily computable textural features based on gray-tone spatial dependancies probably have a general applicability for a wide variety of image-classification applications.

Textured Image Segmentation

TL;DR: In this article, texture energy is measured by filtering with small masks, typically 5x5, then with a moving-window average of the absolute image values, leading to a simple class of texture energy transforms, which perform better than any of the preceding methods.
