Real-life energy use in the UK: How occupancy and dwelling characteristics affect domestic electricity use

TLDR
In this paper, the patterns of electricity consumption were studied for 27 representative dwellings in Northern Ireland, and a clear correlation was found between average annual electricity consumption and floor area, and the difference in the annual demand on the grid between detached and terraced houses is between 24 and 30%.

A clustering approach to domestic electricity load profile characterisation using smart metering data

TL;DR: The availability of increasing amounts of data to electricity utilities through the implementation of domestic smart metering campaigns has meant that traditional ways of analysing meter reading information such as descriptive statistics has become increasingly difficult.

Characterising domestic electricity consumption patterns by dwelling and occupant socio-economic variables: An Irish case study

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the influence of dwelling and occupant characteristics on domestic electricity consumption patterns by analysing data obtained from a smart metering survey of a representative cross section of approximately 4200 domestic Irish dwellings.

Enhancing the performance of building integrated photovoltaics

TL;DR: In this article, a review of recent research in Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is presented with the emphases on a range of key systems whose improvement would be likely to lead to improved solar energy conversion efficiency and/or economic viability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Efficient energy consumption and operation management in a smart building with microgrid

TL;DR: In this article, the optimal scheduling of smart homes' energy consumption is studied using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach, in order to minimise a 1-day forecasted energy consumption cost, DER operation and electricity consumption household tasks are scheduled based on real-time electricity pricing, electricity task time window and forecasted renewable energy output.
Journal ArticleDOI

The socio-economic, dwelling and appliance related factors affecting electricity consumption in domestic buildings

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the socio-economic, dwelling and appliance related factors that have significant or non-significant effects on domestic electricity consumption and conclude that these factors can support both the implementation of effective energy policy and aid prediction of future electricity consumption.

Behavioral approaches to residential energy conservation

TL;DR: In this article, the results of two attitudinal surveys demonstrated that homeowners' summer electricity consumption could be predicted from their energy-related attitudes and personal comfort and health concers were the best predictors of consumption.

Energy Consumption in UK Households : Impact of Domestic Electrical Appliances

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a survey to identify environmental attitudes and beliefs, energy-use behaviour, ownership levels for certain appliances and their utilisation patterns among householders resident in the south-east of England.

Household Behavior and the Use of Natural Gas for Home Heating

TL;DR: In this paper, the factors that determine energy use for home heating are investigated and household behavior and home characteristics prove to be the major determinants, whereas attitudes are of minor importance, whereas home insulation has two opposing effects on energy use: lower thermostat settings, but more airing out of rooms.
Journal ArticleDOI

An integrated framework for energy use and behaviour in the domestic sector

TL;DR: This paper proposes an integrated descriptive framework for energy use and behaviour, based on systems theory, which begins to indicate where the various models and theories from both the engineering and social sciences relate and thus is a first step towards a more integrated and coherent view of energy use.

Home energy use behaviour: a necessary component of successful local government home energy conservation (LGHEC) programs

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate that householder energy use behaviour has an important influence on home energy consumption, and as such should be addressed in local government home energy conservation programs.
