The position of orifices of hair follicles was charted with reference to one to four small, permanent tattoos which were made in the skin with India ink. The tattoos were judged to be permanent if the ink could still be seen 48 hours after tattooing. At this time, the position of the tattoos and the orifices of follicles containing terminal hairs was drawn to scale as illustrated in FIGURE 1. Areas chosen for tattooing contained 6 to 12 hairs. The separately identified hairs were then plucked and preserved for microscopical study. A few hairs were observed to break upon plucking. If the stub could not be pulled immediately, it was removed after an interval of 7 days. Plucked areas were observed a t weekly intervals until the regeneration of hairs had been completed. A hair was considered to have regenerated when its tip projected above the skin. The time required for regeneration of a hair was calculated upon the number of days between plucking of an old hair and the appearance of a new hair above the skin, as observed a t intervals of 7 days. Location of stem cells of human hair follicles by clonal analysis
TL;DR: The hair follicle, like the epidermis, contains keratinocytes with the expected property of stem cells: an extensive proliferative capacity permitting the generation of a large amount of epithelium.

Human hair growth in vitro
TL;DR: The importance of this model to hair follicle biology is demonstrated by the observations that TGF-beta 1 has a negative growth-regulatory effect on hair follicles in vitro and that EGF mimics the in vivo depilatory effects that have been reported in sheep and mice.

Anatomy and physiology of hair
TL;DR: To interpret the results ofhair analysis tests accurately and to understand the appropriate role of hair analysis in drug abuse testing, a basic understanding of the biology of hair is necessary.

Pathologic dynamics of human hair loss. I. Telogen effuvium.
TL;DR: The behavior of the human follicle under stresses which cause temporary loss of hair is concerns, and that brief epoch during which a growing follicle (anagen) becomes transformed into a resting one (telogen) is considered.

Hair analysis provides a historical record of cortisol levels in Cushing's syndrome.

TL;DR: It is suggested that hair cortisol measurement is a novel method for assessing dynamic systemic cortisol exposure and provides unique historical information on variation in cortisol, and that more research is required to fully understand the utility and limits of this technique.

Quantitative measurement of a secondary sex character, axillary hair.
TL;DR: It is the intention to provide data pertaining to growth of axillary hair in males and females a t all ages, with the expectation that these data may serve for a t least preliminary standards, and to examine some of the factors which influence growth of this secondary sex character.

Ageing in apparently normal men. i. urinary titers of ketosteroids and of alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy ketosteroids1
TL;DR: It is intended to describe the extent to which the endocrine state, as reflected in urinary titers of certain steroid hormones and gonadotropins, is correlated with the degree of development and maintenance of slightly more than a score of special items which are either secondary sex characters or influenced in some lesser fashion by sex hormones.

The resistance of hair to certain supposed growth stimulants
TL;DR: There is a popular belief, apparently shared by not a few physicians, that the amount of hair growth is readily influenced by external factors and current ideas that cutting the hair makes it grow better, that cold cream is likely to cause an excess development of hair, and that sunburn and tan are also very favorable to hair growth.
