TLDR
The evidence of diversity in information systems IS research is confirmed and the ways in which diversity both threatens and advances the field of IS are identified.
Abstract
This paper confirms the evidence of diversity in information systems IS research and identifies the ways in which diversity both threatens and advances the field of IS. While advocating diversity within the field of IS, the paper also discusses the responsibilities that must be assumed by IS researchers. Responsibilities include a “disciplined methodological pluralism” Landry and Banville [Landry, M., C. Banville. 1992. A disciplined methodological pluralism for MIS research. Accounting, Management and Inform. Technologies22, April--June 77--97. in which researchers clearly justify their research aims, theories, and methods. Responsibilities also include researchers' commitment to collaborative ideals.

Design science in information systems research

TL;DR: The objective is to describe the performance of design-science research in Information Systems via a concise conceptual framework and clear guidelines for understanding, executing, and evaluating the research.

The nature of theory in information systems

TL;DR: The essay addresses issues of causality, explanation, prediction, and generalization that underlie an understanding of theory, and suggests that the type of theory under development can influence the choice of an epistemological approach.

Bridging the qualitative-quantitative divide: guidelines for conducting mixed methods research in information systems

TL;DR: These guidelines elaborate on three important aspects of conducting mixed methods research: appropriateness of a mixed methods approach; development of meta-inferences; and assessment of the quality of Meta-Inferences.

Combining IS Research Methods: Towards a Pluralist Methodology

TL;DR: It is suggested that research results will be richer and more reliable if different research methods, preferably from different (existing) paradigms, are routinely combined together.

Studying Information Technology in Organizations: Research Approaches and Assumptions

TL;DR: It is suggested that much can be gained if a plurality of research perspectives is effectively employed to investigate information systems phenomena and that there exist other philosophical assumptions that can inform studies of the relationships between information technology, people, and organizations.

Studying Information Technology in Organizations: Research Approaches and Assumptions

TL;DR: The authors examined 155 information systems research articles published from 1983 to 1988 and found that although this research is not rooted in a single overarching theoretical perspective, it does exhibit a single set of philosophical assumptions regarding the nature of the phenomena studied by information systems researchers, and what constitutes valid knowledge about those phenomena.

Barriers to the Advance of Organizational Science: Paradigm Development as a Dependent Variable

TL;DR: The degree of technical certainty or consensus is clearly affected by the fundamental nature of the subject of study, but consensus is also produced by social practices that differentiate fields that are more or less paradigmatically developed.

The Emergence of Interpretivism in IS Research

TL;DR: The paper contributes to analysis of the development of the IS field as a whole, and provides some conceptual ideas and a reference point for further work in this relatively neglected area of research.
