Topology optimization for structural mass reduction of direct drive electric machines

TL;DR: In this article , the rotor of a 5 MW wind turbine generator was analyzed to determine geometric avenues of mass reduction with varying safety factors, and three designs were created with safety factors between 1 and 2 which resulted in structural mass reductions ranging between 54%-67% compared to a baseline design leading to a 13%-25% increase in power density.
Journal ArticleDOI

Schwarzites and schwarzynes based load-bear resistant 3D printed hierarchical structures

TL;DR: In this article , the authors proposed and tested a new approach to create hierarchical porous structures, in which the mass density varies from the center to the borders, i.e., a radial gradient.
Journal ArticleDOI

Machine Learning based Lattice Generation Method derived from Topology Optimisation

Jie Wang, +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a neural network-based inverse lattice generator is trained to output lattice unit cells from the input of target mechanical properties, and the proposed ML-based lattice generation method utilises the density distribution and stress field of low-resolution Topology Optimization (TO) design to inform the inverse generator and produce lattice cells.
Journal ArticleDOI

Design and manufacturing of graded density components by material extrusion technologies

TL;DR: In this article , the authors proposed a method for fabricating graded density shell-based lattice structures for MEX technology by using the infill patterns available in the CAM software and editing the G-code based on a density map defined by volumetric models.
Journal ArticleDOI

Investigation of wear properties of 3D-printed PLA components using sandwich structure – A review

TL;DR: In this paper , the use of composite material in FDM machines enhances the tribological strength of printed components above tribological improvement by altering machine control parameters, and the wear strength of 3D printed specimens is improved by the uniform distribution of composite materials in the feedstock filament.

Fronts propagating with curvature-dependent speed: algorithms based on Hamilton-Jacobi formulations

TL;DR: The PSC algorithm as mentioned in this paper approximates the Hamilton-Jacobi equations with parabolic right-hand-sides by using techniques from the hyperbolic conservation laws, which can be used also for more general surface motion problems.

Cellular Solids: Structure and Properties

TL;DR: The linear elasticity of anisotropic cellular solids is studied in this article. But the authors focus on the design of sandwich panels with foam cores and do not consider the properties of the materials.
Journal ArticleDOI

Generating optimal topologies in structural design using a homogenization method

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a methodology for optimal shape design based on homogenization, which is related to modern production techniques and consists of computing the optimal distribution in space of an anisotropic material that is constructed by introducing an infimum of periodically distributed small holes in a given homogeneous, i.i.
Journal ArticleDOI

A variational approach to the theory of the elastic behaviour of multiphase materials

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived upper and lower bounds for the effective elastic moduli of quasi-isotropic and quasi-homogeneous multiphase materials of arbitrary phase geometry.

Topology Optimization: Theory, Methods, and Applications

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a topology optimization by distribution of isotropic material for truss structures with anisotropic materials, based on the topology design of truss structure.
