TLDR
In this article, the authors evaluated the rheological properties and chemical bonding of nano-modified asphalt binders blended with nanosilica and found that the nanosilsilica was added to the control asphalt at contents of 4% and 6% based on the weight of asphalt binder.
Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the rheological properties and chemical bonding of nano-modified asphalt binders blended with nanosilica In this study, the nanosilica was added to the control asphalt at contents of 4% and 6% based on the weight of asphalt binders Superpave binder and mixture tests were utilized in this study to estimate the characteristics of the nano-modifed asphalt binder and mixture The rotational viscosity (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rhometer (BBR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), asphalt pavement analyzer (APA), dynamic modulus (DM) and flow number (FN) tests were used to analyze rheological properties and chemical bonding changes of the nano-modified asphalt binder and the performance of the nano-modified asphalt mixture In addition, the performance of nano-modified asphalt after rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) short-term and pressure-aging vessel (PAV) long-term aging was assessed as well

The Chemistry of Silica: Solubility, Polymerization, Colloid and Surface Properties and Biochemistry of Silica

Ralph K. Iler
TL;DR: Weber and van Olphen as discussed by the authors provide valuable guidance in research and design efforts by giving a clear understanding of principles and concepts of colloid chemistry as applied to clay systems, including surface characterization and adsorption mechanisms; recent results in the area of clay-organic interaction-the intercalation and intersalation of kaolinite minerals; and increased attention to the possible role of clays in biological evolution.

Polymer modified asphalt binders

TL;DR: A review of research that has been conducted on polymer modified binders over the last three decades can be found in this paper, where the elastic recovery test is good at determining the presence of polymers in an asphalt binder but is less successful at predicting field performance of the pavement.
