This article identified key features of the language of the science classroom as students engage in these language-intensive science and engineering practices and highlighted implications for Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics.
Abstract
The National Research Council (2011) released “A Framework for K–12 Science Education” that is guiding the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, which are expected to be finalized in early 2013. This article addresses language demands and opportunities that are embedded in the science and engineering practices delineated in the Framework. By examining intersections between learning of science and learning of language, the article identifies key features of the language of the science classroom as students engage in these language-intensive science and engineering practices. We propose that when students, especially English language learners, are adequately supported to “do” specific things with language, both science learning and language learning are promoted. We highlight implications for Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics.

Multimodality in the New Content Standards Era: Implications for English Learners

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose weak and strong versions of multimodality in EL education and argue that the strong version is not only necessary but transformative for ELs, because it allows them to draw from the meaning-making resources at their disposal while engaging in disciplinary practices.

From academic language to academic communication: Building on English learners' resources

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose that academic communication better captures the multi-modal dynamics of learning and teaching as it occurs in classrooms, such as problem solving, developing ideas and communicating understanding, involves material action, artifacts, speech and writing, and other semiotic tools such as graphs, diagrams, and images.

Next Generation Science Standards: All Standards, All Students.

TL;DR: The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) offer a vision of science teaching and learning that presents both learning opportunities and demands for all students, particularly student groups that have traditionally been underserved in science classrooms.

A Philosophy of Second Language Acquisition

TL;DR: This paper examined some of the philosophies of second language acquisition and their relationship to classical thought, and used them to devise tools for development of problem-solving skills requisite to practical usage.
