This article identified key features of the language of the science classroom as students engage in these language-intensive science and engineering practices and highlighted implications for Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics.
Abstract
The National Research Council (2011) released “A Framework for K–12 Science Education” that is guiding the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, which are expected to be finalized in early 2013. This article addresses language demands and opportunities that are embedded in the science and engineering practices delineated in the Framework. By examining intersections between learning of science and learning of language, the article identifies key features of the language of the science classroom as students engage in these language-intensive science and engineering practices. We propose that when students, especially English language learners, are adequately supported to “do” specific things with language, both science learning and language learning are promoted. We highlight implications for Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics.

Meeting the Challenges of English Learners by Pairing Science and Language Educators

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined how participation in a paired professional development initiative with focus on multimodalities impacts teachers' pedagogical expertise in both language and science learning, and suggested a language/content pairing model with emphasis on multi-modal teaching strategies for meeting the challenges of linguistically diverse science classrooms.

Teacher Professional Development Organizations’ Interpretation of Educational Language Policy in California

TL;DR: Von Vacano et al. as mentioned in this paper examined how professional development organizations interpreted and implemented California English Language Development and English Language Arts Standards and Framework and found that professional developers were part of the process of authoring the current set of Standards; others partnered with the state and therefore used their agency to interpret and implement these policies in nuanced ways; and a smaller set of organizations advocated for primary language and bilingual education.

Fostering a culture of discourse in secondary mathematics classrooms: equity approaches in teaching and teacher education for emergent bilingual students

TL;DR: The authors argue for implementation of teacher education courses in mathematics that infuse pedagogical language knowledge as a tool for providing future teachers the skills and dispositions to foster a "classroom culture of discourse".

Scientific Literacy Matters: Using Literature to Meet Next Generation Science Standards and 21st Century Skills

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of literature is discussed as one method to augment or supplement the teaching of science and a new conceptual approach is proposed that includes attention to meeting the Next Generation Science Standards while being responsive to the importance of 21st Century Skills.
