PERSPECTIVE Testing for criticality in ecosystem dynamics: the case of Amazonian rainforest and savanna fire
TL;DR: In this article, the authors test for two critical phenomena in Amazonian ecosystems: self-organized criticality (SOC) and critical transitions and find evidence of a critical transition to a megafire regime under extreme drought in rainforests; this phenomenon is likely to determine the time scale of a possible loss of Amazonian rainforest caused by climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quiet-time statistics of electrostatic turbulent fluxes from the JET tokamak and the W7-AS and TJ-II stellarators.
TL;DR: The statistics of the quiet times between successive turbulent flux bursts measured at the edge of the JET tokamak and the W7-AS and TJ-II stellarators are analyzed and results are consistent with what would be expected in the situation where the underlying plasma is indeed in a near critical state.

The Question of Phonology and Reading
Guy C. Van Orden,Heidi Kloos +1 more
TL;DR: For instance, the authors showed a 6-year-old reading the word island aloud, and the effect of reading island aloud seems to depend on an intermediate representation of island's phonology, its cause.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interaction-dominant causation in mind and brain, and Its implication for questions of generalization and replication
TL;DR: Evidence for interaction-dominant dynamics as the causal architecture of the mind is reviewed, pointing out, that such an architecture is consistent with problems of convergence in research on the level of results and theorizing and would probably warrant changes in the scientific practice with regard to study-design and data analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamical Criticality: Overview and Open Questions
TL;DR: The criticality hypothesis as mentioned in this paper states that systems in a dynamical regime between order and disorder attain the highest level of computational capabilities and achieve an optimal trade-off between robustness and flexibility.
