In this article, Rokeach selected 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values for use in two separate rank-order perference scales and asked subjects to rank the values in order of their importance in their lives.
Abstract
minal value is a belief about an end state of existence (e.g., a comfortable life, an exciting life, a sense of accomplishment), and an instrumental value is a belief about a mode of conduct (e.g., ambitious, broadminded, capable). In order to measure the relative importance of values to individuals, Rokeach selected 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values for use in two separate rankorder perference scales. Subjects were instructed to rank the values in order of their importance in their lives. The ranking technique has the advantage of forcing the individual to generate a value system. This is important if one hypothesizes that behavior is determined by the relative (rather than the absolute) importance of a person’s values. However, questions may be raised about the reliability and validity of such a technique. Penner, Homant, and Rokeach (1968) have found that the reliability of Rokeach’s value scales is comparable to that obtained by a more laborious paired-comparison method of measuring those

The measurement of values: Effects of different assessment procedures

TL;DR: In a study involving 382 Ss in introductory psychology, rating and pair-comparison procedures for assessing the importance of terminal and instrumental values were compared with the standard ranking procedure developed by Rokeach as discussed by the authors.

Validity of the Rokeach Value Survey.

TL;DR: The construct validity of the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS) has been evaluated in this paper, showing that it has the theorized dimensions of the survey instrument and that the RVS has the theoretical dimensions.

Ranking the Ratings: The Case of Materialist and Post Materialist Value Orientations

TL;DR: According to Inglehart, this shift is the main source of the changes in the modes of political participation, the nature of the issues, and the decline in support for authority observed in many advanced inustrial societies since the 1960s as discussed by the authors.

The Measurement of Meaning

TL;DR: In this article, the authors deal with the nature and theory of meaning and present a new, objective method for its measurement which they call the semantic differential, which can be adapted to a wide variety of problems in such areas as clinical psychology, social psychology, linguistics, mass communications, esthetics, and political science.

Comparison of Rank-Order and Paired-Comparison Methods for Measuring Value Systems:

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the rank-order and paired-comparison methods of measuring terminal and instrumental values and found that the paired-comparing method yielded a higher reliability only for the terminal values.
