TL;DR: The authors showed that democracy has only indirect influence on economic growth. But they also pointed out that political processes such as democracy and corruption are important factors in determining economic growth, but not necessarily the main determinants of economic success.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of different types of government expenditure on agricultural growth and rural poverty in Uganda were investigated using district-level data for 1992, 1995, and 1999, and the results reveal that government spending on agricultural research and extension improved agricultural production substantially.

The political economy of linguistic cleavages
TL;DR: The authors used a linguistic tree, describing the genealogical relationship between all 6912 world languages, to compute measures of diversity at different levels of linguistic aggregation, and found that deep cleavages, originating thousands of years ago, lead to better predictors of civil conflict and redistribution.

Auditor choice in privatized firms: Empirical evidence on the role of state and foreign owners
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the importance of shareholders' proportionate holdings to auditor choice and found strong, robust evidence that privatized firms worldwide become less likely to appoint a Big Four auditor with the extent of state (foreign) ownership.
