TLDR
The aim of this review was to discuss the factors that can affect sleep quality, such as nutrition, stimulants, and physical activity.Abstract:
Sleep is a cyclically occurring, transient, and functional state that is controlled primarily by neurobiological processes. Sleep disorders and insomnia are increasingly being diagnosed at all ages. These are risk factors for depression, mental disorders, coronary heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and/or high blood pressure. A number of factors can negatively affect sleep quality, including the use of stimulants, stress, anxiety, and the use of electronic devices before sleep. A growing body of evidence suggests that nutrition, physical activity, and sleep hygiene can significantly affect the quality of sleep. The aim of this review was to discuss the factors that can affect sleep quality, such as nutrition, stimulants, and physical activity.read more

24-hour urinary potassium excretion is negatively associated with subjective sleep quality in the general population, independent of sleep-disordered breathing.
Mei Li,Mulalibieke Heizhati,Lin Wang,Zhongrong Wang,Reyila Abudoureyimu,Zhikang Yang,Feng Pan,Le Sun,Wei Li,Jing Li,Mengyue Lin,Lin Gan,Shan Lu,Nanfang Li +13 more
TL;DR: Low potassium intake, indicated by lower potassium excretion, is associated with poor sleep quality in the general population, especially among women, and additional research is necessary to clarify the effect of increasing potassium intake to improve sleep quality.

Short Sleep Duration Is Associated with Reduced Leptin, Elevated Ghrelin, and Increased Body Mass Index
TL;DR: Differences in leptin and ghrelin are likely to increase appetite, possibly explaining the increased BMI observed with short sleep duration, and changes in appetite regulatory hormones with sleep curtailment may contribute to obesity.

TL;DR: Non-depressed people with insomnia have a twofold risk to develop depression, compared to people with no sleep difficulties, so early treatment programs for insomnia might reduce the risk for developing depression in the general population and be considered a helpful general preventive strategy in the area of mental health care.
