TLDR
An analysis of variance model for phytoplankton distribution is described, which allows the partition of the variance of chlorophyll observations into effects due to differences between stations, to Differences between replicate samples at the same station, and to handling and analytical error.

Microplate fecal coliform method to monitor stream water pollution.

TL;DR: The incidence of sample-to-sample variability caused by spatial heterogeneity of bacterial populations in the Moselle River is shown and emphasized, and it is recommended that replicate samples be taken on each occasion when conducting a sampling program for a stream pollution survey.

Phytoplankton activity and standing crop in an impoundment of central Chile

TL;DR: Seasonal and spatial variations of the primary productivity were measured in Rapel reser- voir, Chile in 1976 and 1977 and the photosynthetic behavior of the phytoplankton was shown to be affected mainly by absolute light availability and the dimension of the illuminated water column.
Journal ArticleDOI

Variabilité à court terme du phytoplancton de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent

TL;DR: Within the framework of a general study on time variability in the St. Lawrence Estuary, phytoplankton was sampled at 10-min intervals for 13 h and a symmetric, cosine, tapered filter was applied to the time series of cell counts, the cyclical trend being interpreted in relation to physical variables.

Critical Patch Size for Plankton and Patchiness

TL;DR: The exact mechanism from which plankton patchiness arises is still a subject of considerable controversy as mentioned in this paper, however, the exact mechanism is still open for debate. But, some proposed mechanisms include mechanical retention in wind-generated convective cells or frontal zones, behavioral reaction to distributions of environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, light, and nutrients, exclusion of certain zooplankton by phytoplanks, and food chain association in predator-prey relations.

Remote observations of the marine environment: Spatial heterogeneity of the mesoscale ocean color field in CZCS imagery of California near-coastal waters

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived large-scale, high-resolution images of the diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490 nm, for two regions off the California coast and compared the results with other published examples of spectra derived from both shipboard and satellite measurements of surface parameters and possibly to mirror the turbulent nature of the oceanic environment.

A modified single solution method for the determination of phosphate in natural waters

J. Murphy, +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a single solution reagent was described for the determination of phosphorus in sea water, which consists of an acidified solution of ammonium molybdate containing ascorbic acid and a small amount of antimony.

On Certain Unifying Principles in Ecology

TL;DR: The energy required to maintain an ecosystem is inversely related to complexity, with the natural trend toward decreasing flow of energy per unit biomass; that is, increased maturity.
