TLDR
Age of onset and frequency of use at a lower stage of drug use are strong predictors of further progression, and progression to illicit drugs among men is dependent upon prior use of alcohol.Abstract:
Sequential stages of involvement in alcohol and/or cigarettes, marijuana, other illicit drugs and medically prescribed psychoactive drugs from adolescence to adulthood are investigated in a longitudinal cohort that has been followed from ages 15 to 35. Alternative models of progression are tested for their goodness of fit. Four stages are identified: that of legal drugs, alcohol or cigarettes; marijuana; illicit drugs other than marijuana; and medically prescribed drugs. Whereas progression to illicit drugs among men is dependent upon prior use of alcohol, among women either cigarettes or alcohol is a sufficient condition for progression to marijuana. Age of onset and frequency of use at a lower stage of drug use are strong predictors of further progression.read more

Why do many psychiatric disorders emerge during adolescence
TL;DR: The peak age of onset for many psychiatric disorders is adolescence, a time of remarkable physical and behavioural changes and answers to these questions might enable the understanding of mental health during adolescence.

TL;DR: This paper gives a brief overview of new methods that integrate variable- and person-centered analyses in a general latent variable modeling framework that expands traditional latent variables modeling by including not only continuous latent variables but also categorical latent variables.

Beyond sem: general latent variable modeling
TL;DR: Different applications of latent variable applications are discussed in a unifying framework that brings together in one general model such different analysis types as factor models, growth curve models, multilevel models, latent class models and discrete-time survival models.

Stages in adolescent involvement in drug use
TL;DR: Two longitudinal surveys based on random samples of high school students in New York State indicate four stages in the sequence of involvement with drugs: beer or wine, or both; cigarettes or hard liquor; marihuana; and other illicit drugs.

Drug and Drinking Behavior Among Youth
TL;DR: In this paper, a review focusing on the use of alcohol and other drugs (particularly marihuana) by adolescents and young adults is presented, emphasizing empirical search based on the survey approach, especially longitudinal studies.

The generality of deviance in late adolescence and early adulthood.
TL;DR: This paper found that a relatively stable general involvement in deviance accounted for virtually all association between different types of deviance, but the stability of each behavior could only be explained by equally important and stable specific influences.
