TLDR
In this article, the authors designed a questionnaire to determine if a predicated threshold for the occurrence of corrosion of a piece of steel is real and whether a threshold exists.
Abstract
THE TESTS DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER WERE DESIGNED TO: IDENTIFY THE MECHANISM BY WHICH CORROSION OF STEEL IS INITIATED, PROVIDE QUANITATIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF CHLORIDES, AND DETERMINE IF A PREDICTABLE THRESHOLD OF CORROSION EXISTS LABORATORY STUDIES ARE REPORTED ON THE CORROSION OF BARE STEEL RODS IN ENVIRONMENTS SIMULATING POROUS CONCRETE CONTAMINATED WITH CHLORIDES THE INITIATION OF CORROSION IS SHOWN TO REQUIRE FREE OXYGEN AT THE STEEL SURFACE AND A RATIO OF CHLORIDE TO HYDROXYL ION ACTIVITY OF AT LEAST 06 A PROBABILITY MODEL IS USED TO EXPLAIN THE CHLORIDE EFFECT AND TO PREDICT THE THRESHOLD VALUE CAUSING CORROSION /AUTHOR/

Influence of chloride salt type on threshold level of reinforcement corrosion in simulated concrete pore solutions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the influence of chloride salt type on the threshold level for the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete, and the experiment was carried out in two kinds of simulated concrete pore solutions, i.e., saturated Ca(OH) 2 solution and cement extract.

Environmental factors affecting the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel. IV. Variation in the pitting corrosion current in relation to the concentration of the aggressive and the inhibitive anions

TL;DR: In this paper, the pitting corrosion current of reinforcing steel is measured under natural corrosion conditions in Ca(OH) 2 solutions in presence of Cl − as aggressive ions and CrO 4 2 -, HPO4 2, NO 2, WO 42 - and MoO 4.2 - as inhibiting anions.

A review on corrosion detection and protection of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures

TL;DR: In this article , a comprehensive review on corrosion detection techniques and protection methods for existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures where corrosion has already occurred is presented, with the basic working mechanism and state of the art of each method given.

Chloride threshold value to initiate reinforcement corrosion in simulated concrete pore solutions: The influence of surface finishing and pH

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of steel surface finishing and pH of simulated concrete pore solutions (SCPS) on the chloride threshold value (CTV) was evaluated, with four different finishes: as received (T), diamond-polished (D), polished (P500) and pre-oxidized (DH).

Probability-based durability analysis of concrete structures in marine environment

TL;DR: In this paper, a durability model for the reinforcement corrosion, based on the second Law of Fick, is developed that takes into account the time dependant parameter for diffusion coefficient and the influence of temperature.
