TLDR
In this article, a new definition of scalar step heights is presented in terms of crystallographic parameters, where the dislocation portion is associated with the long-range strain field and shape change, and the step portion with divergences in diffusional fluxes associated with growth.

Coupling grain boundary motion to shear deformation

TL;DR: In this paper, the coupling factor between the normal grain boundary (GB) motion and grain translations has been calculated by molecular dynamics simulations over the entire misorientation range and a wide range of temperatures, showing an abrupt switch from one branch to another at a tilt angle of about 35°.
Journal ArticleDOI

Atomistic modeling of interfaces and their impact on microstructure and properties

TL;DR: An overview of the most recent developments in the area of atomistic modeling with emphasis on interfaces and their impact on microstructure and properties of materials is given in this paper, along with some challenges and future research directions in this field.
Journal ArticleDOI

(1¯012) Twinning nucleation mechanisms in hexagonal-close-packed crystals

TL;DR: In this article, two twinning mechanisms for hexagonal-close-packed crystals at an atomic scale were studied using topological analysis and atomistic simulations, and the results show that the zonal-twinning mechanism is energetically favorable relative to the normal-twin mechanism, because the Zn dislocation has a smaller Burgers vector.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ultrafast electron microscopy in materials science, biology, and chemistry

TL;DR: The use of pump-probe experiments to study complex transient events has been an area of significant interest in materials science, biology, and chemistry as discussed by the authors, and there is a significant and growing interest in using electrons as probes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Size Effects on Magnetic Actuation in Ni-Mn-Ga Shape-Memory Alloys

TL;DR: Process, micro- and macrostructure, and magneto-mechanical properties of Ni-Mn-Ga powders, fibers, ribbons and films with one or more small dimension are reviewed, which are amenable to the growth of bamboo grains leading to large MFIS, and "constructs" from these structural elements are proposed.

Dislocations in solids

TL;DR: In this article, Bertotti, Ferro, and Mazetti proposed a theory of dislocation drag in covalent crystals and formed a model of the formation and evolution of dislocations during irradiation.

LXXXIII. Crystal dislocations.—Elementary concepts and definitions

TL;DR: In this article, the basic concepts of crystal dislocation theory are defined in a manner independent of particular crystal lattices or models or special orientations of the dislocation, and it is shown how their essential properties arise, in so far as they are independent of the particular crystal in which they occur.

Atomic mechanisms of precipitate plate growth

TL;DR: In this article, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, image simulation, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and convergent-beam electron diffraction are used to characterize the atomic structure, chemistry and growth mechanisms of γ' plate-shaped precipitates in an Al-4·2 at.c.% Ag alloy aged for 30min at 350°C.
