Sterols in the western North Atlantic Ocean

TLDR
The sterol concentrations in fourteen surface and nine deep water samples collected from the continental shelf and slope waters of the western North Atlantic and Sargasso Sea ranged from 1 to 13μ/l seawater as discussed by the authors.

Organic geochemistry of natural waters

E. M. Thurman
TL;DR: The first part of the book as mentioned in this paper is a general overview of the amount and general nature of dissolved organic carbon in natural waters, and the second part is a summary of the data that has accumulated from many disciplines over the last decade.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular evidence for a terrestrial component of organic matter dissolved in ocean water

TL;DR: The first unambiguous evidence for the presence of terrestrially derived organic compounds in open ocean water was reported in this paper, using lignin-derived phenols as molecular-level probes of organic compounds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seasonal changes of the biochemical composition of marine particulate matter with special reference to fatty acids and sterols

TL;DR: In this article, seasonal changes in particulate size spectra, biochemical con-position, fatty acid and sterol content were followed from winter to fall in a small north Atlantic coastal basin.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolutionary trends in the lipid biomarker approach for investigating the biogeochemistry of organic matter in the marine environment

TL;DR: The use of che-mometric techniques due to increasing chemical information and the interest of combining molecular-level and stable isotope approaches are discussed, including the investigation of intact lipid classes and the elucidation of the position of double bonds of unsaturated fatty acids and alkenes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Coprostanol as an indicator of fecal pollution

TL;DR: This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using coprostanol as an indicator sterol, details the results of numerous field studies, and examines the future prospects for this pollution indicator.

Mass spectrometry in structural and stereochemical problems

TL;DR: The mass spectral fragmentation of a number of steroidal delta4-3-ketones has been examined and reactions associated with the alpha,beta-unsaturated ketonic function are not particularly significant; rather, abundant ions are formed by decomposition processes occurring in and around ring D.
Journal ArticleDOI

The distribution of sterols in algae

TL;DR: Gas and thin layer chromatography and mass spectroscopy in particular, have been used to resolve some of the confusion concerning the sterol composition of algae.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sterols of the fungi: Distribution and biosynthesis

John D. Weete
- 01 Jan 1973 -
TL;DR: The composition and biosynthesis of ergosterol in these organisms and comparison to plant and animal sterol formation are made are made.
